Update to Fences 5, and the auto-hide (Vanish) is not working when double-clicking the desktop.  My icons are always showing.  I have tried to turn the Vanish option off/on (enable/disable) but still not working.  Something to check and fix.

I did try on both Win10 and 11:

Win11:

If you reinstall \ reboot, does it still happen?

Running Fences changed icon desktop size, changed icon text size (way too big). I had to exit fences and reset scaling and icon sizing to get it back to the way it was.

I reinstalled it over the existing from download and it is fine now and Chameleon works now too.  Upgrade from 4.x seems buggy I guess.

This reads like an inadvertent Ctrl + Middle mouse wheel scroll

I'll pass Fences 5: customer of Stardock for 10 years and the price is equal for new customers and old ones (in the option Permanent License)

I just don't get why people cannot understand that nearly all software companies require payment for new (significant) versions.
If you have a paid support contract, you will most likely get free upgrades.

Nothing different than a subscription system like Stardock has....

I agree, Phoon. It's simply "unreal expectations".

Windows 11 Pro - 22635.2700; Fences 5 - 5.0.0.1; Start11v2 - 2.0.1.1

In Fences 5, If "Quick hide" is enabled, I have noticed the following issues:

1) When double clicking the desktop to hide or show Fences, Start11 has to repaint the start menu if you use the Windows key, but doesn't if you click the Start button on the taskbar. (only tested on the Windows 10 style.)

2) When the "Show Fences" icon is added to the taskbar, when the icon is clicked and the Fences are shown, opening and then closing the Start11 menu with the Windows key hides the fences, opening and closing the Start11 menu again with the Windows key shows the fences.

Clicking the Start button on the taskbar to open the Start menu and then clicking again to close the Start menu hides the fences. However, clicking the Start button again doesn't show the fences again.

It all crumbles down to that there is no force involved here. Just a choice. If you don't like the deal - move on.

I have a couple of Folder Portals that I made.

I like to have things in details view.

The issue I see is that the view options do not follow down throughout the folders. You have to set that manually for each folder you open.

Hi Phoon, thanks for the insight. Good news- this is something the team would like to have in Fences 5, and the beginnings are underway!

To help us with the specifics, any chance you could share how you'd expect it to work?

  • Should a child folder always inherit from its direct parent? Or from the root folder of the folder portal? (I.e. if A->B->C, and you change "B", does "C" inherit from "A" or "B".)
  • Would you expect this "inherit" option to be on by default, or something you turn on on a Fence-by-Fence basis?
  • What should its behavior be if you change the parent's view style, after already having visited a child? (So, you've been using it in icon mode, and then you change the parent to Details. Should all the children switch over to Details, provided you haven't manually changed the child to "Icons"/etc already, or would this be unexpected?)
  • Would you expect any ability to set what all children's view states are by default? So, you'd like the root of the folder portal to be "Icon", but all children to be "Details", etc, etc, or vice versa, or/any other behaviors you'd like that we might not expect?
  • And finally, any circumstance you can think of where you would want this feature off for a specific Fence? (If so, what is that scenario & compare to the "it should follow the parent" scenario you had in mind.)

Sounds like you'd just like everything to be details, so the spec is pretty simple, but just making sure we get it right.

Thanks for any detail & we appreciate your support!

In light mode, the Options menu for Chameleon mode could be more visible. I didn't notice it at first. Looks a little bit better in dark mode.

Hey Jan, good call out here thank you, re the options text. Would you be able to share the accent color on your system? I think that it may be related. We'll get that fixed up. Thanks!

The Snapshots issue we're thinking may be isolated to Windows 10, which means we've got a fix in mind. Since the team is able to reproduce, we should be able to take of this promptly. Thank you!

 - From the root folder of the folder portal

    • Would you expect this "inherit" option to be on by default, or something you turn on on a Fence-by-Fence basis?

- A toggle would be best I think. This gives options to folks that don't want that.

 - No idea on that :)

- That would be a cool feature!

Today I first uninstalled the Fences 4 and then installed the new Fences 5.

So far everything is fine.

Unfortunately, the bugs I have already reported in Fences 4 are also included in Fences 5.

- Despite the setting of the program in German, you get a mixture of German and English in the options.

- Under "Snapshots" the option "Distance between fences keeps x pixels apart when moving" does not work.

New:

Under "About", the link "Manage Supscription" leads to a website:

404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

 Screenshots on this:

https://forums.stardock.com/523786/page/1/#3908932

The "problem" with the two entries in the "Autoruns" program is still there:

When please, the problem with the language will be solved.

It is for someone who no English cannot easily set the program.

Thank you.

Hi MM73, thanks for the report. Yes, translations for v5.0 are still in the works as the update is in release-preview and not final, but we'll be getting that updates here as we go. We apologize it's not ready at this time.

Regarding "Autorun", I'd like to gain more information if possible. What program is in that screenshot, showing the entries for "StardockFencesHotKeySupport" and "StardockFencesStartup"? Could you share more about the problem you're experiencing with those?

Thanks for the report regarding the Manage Subscription button, the team is getting that taken care of.

Also, the "Distance between fences keeps x pixels apart when moving" box not updating has been fixed for the next update, thank you for the report!

Please let us know more about the "Autorun" issue you were seeing and again thank you for the report.

I purchased a lifetime license for Fences 5. I also have a longstanding OD subscription. My problem is that I cannot install Fences 5 because it will not accept the provided license key. I tried the 30 day free trial, received my e-mail & clicked, with the same result Error Code 212. My version of Windows 11 Pro is the latest official release which was updated this past Tuesday. Assuming that works itself out, should I first uninstall version 4. or will version 5 simply overwrite it? Please assist. Thanks! It sounds like a great upgrade, but you really need to make activations go a little smoother.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. When you purchase permanent license for Fences 5 you will receive a new activation key. Are you using this key? Also if your OD subscription still active you can also use your OD subscription key to activate it. So which one does not work?

Thank you.

The purchased key for Fences 5 that was on my order receipt does not work. I just tried my OD key as you suggested. That does not work. As I said, I also tried the 30 day free trial. Couldn't even activate that. They all give the same results.

Hello Dr W,

thank you for the feedback.

The Autoruns program is a portable Microsoft program.

Link: https://learn.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinterals/downloads/autoruns

This program always indicates that the two Stardock Fences entries found do not exist.

I deactivated these two entries once in Autoruns and then started Fences 5.

Although I did not activate the two options under "Hotkeys", I received the indication of Fences 5 that a service could not be started and I know that I should look for this service in the task manager and if I don't know about I restart the PC or even reinstall Fences 5.

I do not know if this is a mistake/problem of Autoruns or Fences 5, but maybe you could fix this, I know many who use Autoruns to delete unnecessary or no longer existing things.

Thank you in advance.

The only deviation would be to delete any folder named Fences in ProgamData.

Did not work. My only Fences folder was Fences 4. I deleted that, but I still can't activate or use Fences!

Update: I uninstalled both versions [?] using Revo Uninstaller and removed all traces of Fences. Of course, then I had icons all over my desktop. Anyway, after a reboot, I installed Fences 5 and my purchased license worked. Just spent a load of time rearranging my icons into new fences. Not sure it was worth the upgrade.
