Can no longer have fence one icon wide (defaults to two)

Until recently, I had tall fences on the side of my screen, one icon wide. With the latest version (3 and 4), I can no longer have a single icon width fence, it defaults to two. Put another way, if I create a minimum width fence, it seems to assume two columns, with the right column hidden.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system and issue. Please refer here: [Link].

We need to know.

  1. Windows full version number. Use Winver.exe.
  2. Fences version number.
  3. Monitor/s scale factor: 100%, 200% etc. And do you change the factor often?
  4. Monitor/s resolutions: Do you play games that change resolution when load.
  5. Any other relevant information.

Thanks

Hi,

Windows 10 Pro 22H2 19045.3570, Fences 4.21, Monitor 100%, 1920x1080, no games played.

If I zoom the desktop with ctrl and mouse wheel, I can find a position where I can obtain a single column of icons in a fence. Any smaller and it switches to two columns, with the right column actually not being visible, there is no scroll bar in the fence when that happens.

I read in this forum, the problem was fixed in V4, so I upgraded and it is not fixed. So I paid for an upgrade for no reason. (Also when upgrading, the fences settings were not maintained, so with V4, I had to correct the settings of each fence).

This problem seems prevalent and I did try some of the suggestions mentioned in the various thread, but without any effect on the problem. As mentioned, I did find a workaround in finding the 'magic scaling' where one column was present. It's not a fix though and the icons are bigger than I'd prefer.

Okay, I can reproduce this issue on my Win10 system, if using none standard desktop icons sizes. Standard Classic/Medium/Large icons works as expected. I have forwarded your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

I posted about this same issue a year ago.  Stardock basically said to do a clean reset, which didn't work.  Then they just stopped responding.

Six months later, the issue persists.  Saw there was a new version of V4.  I thought it might fix the issue.  It doesn't.  Guess the developer never got around to it.  All this new version does is nag you to buy V5.  Don't buy Stardock: they do not support their products.

Feb 2026 - Using Fences 6.20

Problem still persists.

Can anyone recommend an alternative product that is actually supported?

Yea it's crazy how they keep coming out with new versions in order to force more money out of us but can't fix simple bugs.  I tried other alternatives and they were all worse in other ways.  Unfortunately, Fences is the best we got.  On the bright side, I found a workaround.  If you increase your icon size on single column fences, there is a point where it stops wrapping the icons outside the fence.  It's not ideal, because it means your single column fences cannot use small icons, but it at least works.

I found that work-around as well. The problem is, that the icon size is NOT limited to one single fence but rather to ALL fences. Thus, in order to make the 5 icons larger in one fence, I end up having to make some 200 icons larger in ALL fences.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, I tested on my Fences 6.2 and I can't reproduce your issue. More details might help us understand the issue and reproduce it.

Need more details.

  1. Windows full version and OS Build number.
  2. Fences full version installed.
  3. Desktop icons size.
  4. Any other information that might help.

Thank you,

I am encountering this problem on

Windows 10 Version 22H2  OS Build 19045.6809 - Using 3 Monitors
The monitor where the problem is happening runs at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 scaled to 250%
The selected Icon size is "Classic Icons" (NOT modified using CTRL-scroll)

Thanks for trying Basj! I have now re-configured my desktop such that it can accommodate a two-column fence. I simply don't have the time to play with this any longer and, since you can't replicate the problem, you obviously can't fix it.
If there is a way to mark a tread closed, please feel free to do so: I will not be spending any more time on this.

We can take this issue to my thread if Stardock is now serious about fixing it.  This is happening consistently for me in Fences 3, 4, and 5.  I am not paying for 6 unless this is confirmed fixed.  https://forums.stardock.com/515343/page/1/#3925334

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. As you can see from my screenshot above, the issue does not appear on my system with Fences 6.2. Perhaps, you can do the 30 days free trial on Fences 6 and see if the issue still appear on your system. Perhaps, we can learn something in your system that perhaps force Fences has issue with Single icons vertical size Fences.

Can you not install Fences 5 instead?  I dont want to lose all my configuration because inevitably I'll have to downgrade.

Your setting should still be there when you uninstall Fences 6 and reinstall Fences 5. If you wish you can always save a layout before installing Fences 6,

However, I just tested Fences 5.89 and I can not reproduce your issue. Refer screenshot below.

Well, that's unfortunate.  I sent a video in the other thread to show you what it looks like.  I can send my config or do further troubleshooting if you want, but I don't know what else to say.

Would like to suggest doing a Sandbox test and see if it also happen in a Sandbox: Refer here: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1416560645/Testing+Fences+in+Sandbox

Or, do the Cleanboot steps: Refer here: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1332445272/Fences+Clean+Boot. Do note Clean boot need to be done with care.

Try these and report back.
