Dumb Question, but how do I?...

remove the backgroud color from desktop icons, i.e. have a wallpaper and need the (background color)text under the icons to be transparent. running XP, thanks for your help

That's weird, try enabling ClearType! I'm at work so I can't tell you where exactly is that setting, I know is in display Properties, and under Appearance.

Right click on "My Computer", go to properties then advanced. Under Performance options go to visual effects. The setting is "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop". Check that box and all will be well.

You can also get to it from control panel, performance and maintenance, system..

Thanks all, sent me in the right direction. The part that actually enabled it was from right clicking on the desktop to Properties - > Desktop click on -> Web an uncheck the "Lock Desktop Items" checkbox.
