Help needed on Litestep skins

Usually, if you download a zipped Litestep theme, you just unzip it into the "Themes" folder inside the Litestep folder, (usually: C:\ Litestep) and then the theme should appear in your theme manager window.

(I am kinda guessing at all this, since I haven't skinned Litestep since the OTS format came out, but it seems the logical way of doing things.)

OTS2 is the most recent Litestep theme format.
If you've been using lsz files you likely have installed Litestep with the OTS2 installer. lsz files will only work with that version. So in other words it sounds like you're up to date.

Now there are a ton of other Litestep themes packaged in the zip format. If the theme calls itself OTS2 compatible, than you should be able to install them with the theme-installer that comes with the Litestep OTS2 installer.

But most of the zip format themes are older themes and won't work with the Litestep OTS2 version "right out of the box". But just about any Litestep theme can be converted to work with the newer versions of Litestep. It takes a little bit of reading and tweaking.

Creezpy...from the tone and substance of your questions I'm not too sure that LiteSTEP will be 'right' for you....at least not for a while.

It is not a 'skin' as such, but a replacement 'shell', used in place of explorer.exe, the default Windows shell.

Playing with shell replacements has the potential to seriously 'mess' with your system unless the user has taken the time to familiarize himself with its workings.

As to the 'wallpaper making' software, there are all sorts, from MSPaint to Photoshop [and beyond]....but LiteSTEP is one heck of a lot MORE than a 'wallpaper'...

lite step is an aquired taste it takes time to fully beable to understand how it works. the themes here that say OTS2 are the only ones your litestep version will run...u say that the lsz files work but not the zip files .. thats because the zips are from a older version of lite step and they havent been up dated ... now is my sugestion u run the litestep in addition to ur explorer desktop..all u have to do is run the litestep exe and dont have it set as your default shell...
this will allow u to run and experiment with lite step and get familiar with its workings before u try to run it as your only shell.....

i know litestep its something more than a skin, i used that word
but i realy liked it and ive been using windowsblinds for about 1 year now so its time to try something new.
if i "mess" up something realy bad ill just erase windows and start over
ive been trying whit the zipfiles and are starting to go forward.
Ive been looking every day the last 2weeks for new shells but still i cant find some shells i realy whants on this pc, i loved the sputnik shell but im already using that one on my laptop.
but the real question is how do i make a shell?
if someone tells me what program i use ill atleast try some 100 times before i give up,
and maybe I become a new shell maker on wincustomize

ok i hope u realize litestep dosent replace window blinds. litestep changes the desktop only not the windows, u will still need WB to make the windows skinned .. with that said... id sugest u first dl a theme u like and then start modifying it as u get used to how the images are used u will also start to see how litestep uses the images to build your desktop. at litestep.net theres many doc's u can read on working with litestep...as for the graphics parts ,theres many more here who are better qualified than i to help in that area...

Creezpy, if your really determined to go further with Litestep, HG_Eliminators' advice is the way I would go.

Litestep will replace your start button and give you the right click popup menu.

So find a Litestep theme you really like (and works ok for you).

The "theme.rc" file in that theme is the key. By changing that file you can change the functionality of the theme. You will have to read some of the documentation to understand what to change in that file. The Litestep docs that are included with your OTS2 installer will help a lot.

Right click on the desktop to bring up your popup menu. Mouse-over the Litestep entry, go to module docs. Those are help files that descibe how to configure each module. The settings they describe usually go in the theme.rc we already mentioned.

You may want to try using the theme with a bare minimum of modules. Maybe popup2, desktop2(or jdesk), Shortcut2, and a tray and vwm module. In the theme.rc there are lines that begin with:
*NetLoadModule
If you place a ; mark in front of that line it will comment out that module. That means the theme will not read that line. That is how to take modules out of that theme.

Once you get the theme really stripped down, look at what images your theme is using. Using a paint type program (paint, corel photo paint, photoshop, or the gimp) create a few graphics of your own. Use those graphics in your theme rather than the original ones. You will have to change the theme.rc again to make it use your graphics rather than the ones that came with the theme. More reading but it's not too difficult.

If you can get this far you will be well on your way to making your own themes.
