Start11 1.4.11 Changelog (Released: 03/07/2023)

03/07/2023

  • Version updated to 1.4.1.1 (1.41 in UI)

  • Addresses the issue with parts of the tray not painting when in experimental center mode on Win11 22H2 KB5022913 and a further tweak to taskbar transparency being lost due to an OS bug on the same update.

03/06/2023

  • Version updated to 1.4.1.0

  • Fix for taskbars without blur losing transparency after screen change events when on KB5022913 due to a new OS bug

  • Fix for Win10 menu mode being left in A-Z picker mode if closed when in that mode

  • Fix for Win10/11 folder groups having the wrong order of icons painted when collapsed sometimes

  • Fixed an issue with if you set a custom taskbar color to black and then disable blur and set transparency to 0% (aka fully transparent) then the taskbar turned solid instead

  • Updated localization files with new text.

03/04/2023

  • Version updated to 1.4.0.5 (1.4 in UI)

  • A fix for the taskbar controls being misaligned on the taskbar on a tablet when you have, at some point, used a custom scaling factor and have resized the taskbar.

  • A tweak for resizing taskbars in that mode to workaround a rounding error and refreshes the taskbar blur after screen resolution changes etc.

  • Adjusted small mode taskbar to have larger icons on ‘KB5022913’ as the start button + taskview etc buttons are larger on that OS in that state so increased to match a bit better

03/03/2023

  • Version updated to 1.4.0.4 (1.4 in UI)

  • Fixes the position of the new search box on the taskbar with ‘KB5022913’ when the multiline taskbar is enabled or the taskbar is on top.

  • Small-mode taskbar items now have a wider active indicator bar under them

  • A tweak to the detection of the touch-optimized taskbar capable hardware

  • A tweak to swapping from large/small icons when switched to autohide mode

  • Improved WB compatibility so a WB skin now correctly shrinks the start button

03/02/2023

  • Versioned as 1.4.0.3 on the file itself (1.4 in UI)

  • Fixes a slow taskbar issue with enhanced taskbar on

  • Makes the search box shift over correctly when clicked when the taskbar is showing the search box and Start11 is in experimental center mode

  • Fixes a jump to invisible default buttons issue on the config when jumping to default buttons is enabled in some mouse driver

  • Allows the taskbar to paint black

  • Tweaks the sync pins code to see if that helps with a report of it looping.

  • Forces autohide taskbars to medium bar size as the new Windows 11 taskbar only supports that

03/01/2023

  • Build updated to 1.4.0.2 (Start 11 ‘About’ will still read 1.4, however).

  • Addressing compatibility issues associated with KB5022913

    • Fixed the issue with the secondary taskbars when in only show buttons on the monitor the window is on mode and also a fix for the line on the taskbar not appearing over some parts of the taskbar correctly

02/27/2023

  • Updated S11 to 1.4 which (hopefully) will address the issues introduced with the new Windows taskbar in Windows 11 build: 22621.1324 and beta/dev channel insider

Known issues

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.

  1. Transparency on taskbar
Transparency on taskbar without blur enabled might become solid in some circumstances on 22h2 KB5022913. Under investigation for future updates. Clicking on the taskbar is likely to resolve it

  2. Windows native start menu unresponsive to clicks
There is a known issue on Windows 11, under certain taskbar conditions (Enhanced taskbar, Search) and Start11 set to show the Windows 11 menu:

...where nothing is clickable in the start menu.  We have it fixed in an internal build and will be pushed with the next update.

  3. Systray apps do not wrap
If you are on preview versions of Windows, Microsoft made changes to the systray in that all icons in it will display on one line like so:

Changing the height of the taskbar will not change this effect.

If we find that something can be done to change it, we will be sure to include options for it.

All, we have released Start11 1.4.2 to beta today.

Before posting here, please look to that thread to see if any issue you may have has been addressed with it.

As always, thanks for your time, support, and feedback.

In an effort to address #1 and #2 above: we have created the following build:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Start11_1.4.2.0-j300-Setup.exe

To minimize any potential for file overwriting issues, please uninstall Start11, reboot, and install this version.

Please, DO NOT distribute this version in any way for no other reason that it may have a short life.

Hi!

I am using the latest stable release 1.41 and noticed if I am using file explorer and navigating between "This PC" and Drives and Folders each direction the explorer icon is changing but on the taskbar it changing with a huge delay. Sometimes it changing only when explorer window losts focus.

Sometimes icon is changing but to the previous location's icon not to the current location's.

I tried this on 2 separate install.

You can see the correct icon on the right in each case.

Windows 11 Pro, 22H2, 22621.1344

Start11 1.4.11

When taskbar size is set "Small" and taskbar Autohide is enabled, taskbar remains large.

Taskbar Autohide On

When Autohide is disabled and taskbar size is set to "Small" then taskbar changes size to small.

Taskbar Autohide Off

That is correct, going forward, because of changes made in the operating system, when using auto-hide taskbar the size has to be set to medium

I wanted to draw attention to this issue with moving "tile groups" on the Windows 10 style Start Menu.  It is impossible to rearrange groups near the bottom of the list if there are a lot of groups.  This doesn't seem to have been addressed for 1.4.x.

Transparency settings are still not sticking.

Transparency settings are still not sticking.

There is a bug in the new windows update relating to that when blur is disabled.

Enable blur on the taskbar and it should work OK.

We are still looking at a workaround for this.  It should have been listed as a known issue but for some reason isn't.

More information on when this happens would be useful.

Copying my latest feedback because it's still same:

  1. Clicking on grouped windows is still not opening the previews to select the window.
  2. Icons are much bigger, I think a little bit too big. On some apps you can miss with app is open because the bar under almost joins with the icon:
  3. Tooltips are still strangely far from icon:
  4. Still it would be nice to resize the system icons:
  5. Still restarting explorer causes it to freeze for a bit of time.

But generally, it's close to be perfect

EDIT: Ok I found one serious issue - when starting computer the taskbar is freezed for first +/- minute - on screen #1 it's the nice small Start11 taskbar, on screen #2 it displays the stock Windows taskbar but without any icons except Windows, Search, Workspaces and date, on screen #3 it looks like on #2 but is slightly taller. After a minute all taskbars refreshes to the Start11 but (and here is the issue) - the system tray is almost empty, contains only some from many running apps. And it's not like the apps are not running, they are visible in task manager, if I open the apps the instantly shows but still not appearing in system try. So basically 2/3 of apps that should be visible in system try are not there even when the apps are running. It's not happening when enhanced taskbar is disabled. When I restart explorer everything is back to normal.

Here is how the freezed taskbars looks during the startup:

Here is system try after startup, before restarting explorer:

And after restarting explorer:

EDIT 2: Randomly all taskbars switched green

Windows 11 22H2 (22621.1344)

With taskbar enhanced but the Start11 start menu disabled, i.e. using Windows' standard start menu, the start menu fails to log clicks or keypresses. I have this issue on both my PCs with 22621.1344.

What alignment and position is your taskbar set to?

Do you have anything else installed that might conflict with Start11?

Also does this happen if enhanced taskbar is disabled?

Finally how many monitors do you have?

The issue reproduces with all three alignment options, I use a left-aligned start with centre-aligned icons.

There appears to be one active area on the broken start menu, down and right of the search box shows an I-beam cursor for text input. Clicking shows a misaligned search panel, resting on the bottom of the screen with the search input box exactly where the cursor was. Snipping tool window snip also shows a highlight rectangle where the search panel will appear when the start menu is visible.

This led me to play about with the various search options for the display of search on the taskbar.

Hide: Start works but the search panel is misaligned when launched from start
Search icon only: Start works but the search panel is misaligned when launched from both start and icon
Search icon and label: Start works but the search panel is misaligned when launched from both start and icon
Search box: Start broken search panel is misaligned when launched from start but not search box

Thank you for that additional debugging as that has allowed us to reproduce the issue.

We will look into resolving it for the next update.

I have the same issue.
Alignement middle
No start11 search
No start11 start menu
Just start11 taskbar set to ungroup

With these settings nothing is clickable inside the start menu (except icon a the left column)
No issue if start11 start menu is enabled

not that i know of. i do have a few things installed but none of them related to the taskbar. also it worked perfectly before the stupid "optional cumulative update" on windows.

left aligned bottom of the screen

if i switch off the taskbar part in start11 everything works fine with the start menu et al. its "just" when enabling the taskbar part ("taskbar" in start 11 and the on off switch at the top).

"never" on grouping
blur wallpaper: off
automatic colour: off
adjust taskbar transparency: 100% solid
show seconds on taskbar clock: on
start button: all off
custom textures: all off

right clicking:
... show win-x menu when right clicking: on
... replace taskbar right click menu: off

advanced taskbar tweaks:
size: small
align bottom for the other settings

4 monitors. 1920 x 1080

---------

so interestingly enough.. i made the taskbar 0% solid transparency... restarted. it went into crash like mode. then with win key it opened the default win11 start menu and i could get to start11. turned off the taskbar setting.. restarted. now my taskbar is the standard win11 taskbar (i think) only its fully transparent still lol

Do you have the same crash issue if you set your computer to only use the primary monitor?

Winkey + P and pick PC Screen only would set it to this mode as a test.

lol wtf.. how would that cause an issue... yips can confirm it works fine then. *puzzled*

i would never have thought to try that

Can you try slowly enabling monitors one by one and see when it breaks?

on switching on the 2nd screen. tried recording it but with explorer doing strange stuff it would need other software :(

basicaly... switch off other screens. start11 and enable taskbar. "needs to restart explorer" - ok. and it works. the taskbar gets smaller and the icons ungroup. switch on 2nd screen. looks like the taskbars repaint but the 2nd screen only has a start button on it (didnt see if it was clickable - in hindsight.. i need to retry it all). then clicked "restart explorer" and it all repaints to a large clunky bar. goes black. then goes transparent with the normal windows bar but no quicklins and a broken task bar area. if you have an app open its fine. pc works as per normal. its "just" the taskbar (and start menu seems iffy as in the taskbar button isnt clickable)
