Research Station Utility After Level 5

I wanted to ask if research stations did anything after you researched level 5 civ/mil?  I have just been destroying them after I was done, but am not sure if they have any other utility?  Thanks.

In the older games losing stations meant certain abilities were no longer available if that station was required to research it.

Im wondering if they will intend to do that again.

Having extra research stations speeds up research.  However, in my experience, most games are over long before that would make a difference, simply because much of the research can be skipped.  For example, with the logarithmic function limiting income, it can take a really long time to repay the investment into "immense cargo holds".  If you think the game isn't going to last forever, skip it.

Are you sure that the number of research stations still dictates research speed?  I destroy all my stations when I research level 5 and it seems to be pretty quick still.

Yes it does, but not much.  I was curious enough to edit the files and make them free, and use fewer slots.  If you have 100+ of them, you can trim total research for everything down from about 5 hour to 3.5 hours.  So.... not worth it.
