Adding a Second Hard Drive

Nothing to do with skinning..............
Can I put a second hard drive in my PC despite the lack of bays? There is room inside but not an available bay. Also, does it have to be mounted a certain way - can I put it upside down or on it's side? Thanks for the help.

Why dosen't the author of this thread just get a brand new case? That would solve all problems.

And Jafo maxtor reccommends NOT putting the drive in any way but the proper way, label side up and not on it's side or upside down.

I add to this motion. DO NOT run a HD on it's side or upside down, reason for this is because the heads could get out of line and scratch the platters or it just goes out of sync and this is how corruption can happen.


So thats why Win95 on our old PI 166 got sooo messed up after I dismantled it and...um...*tried* to put it back together...

Heck IBM is now using a chip that monitors sudden shifts in G-Force on the off chance you might drop your laptop and it instantly parks the heads....

As far as going over and over on what not to do with installing a drive.
The action is moot.

I've a wall covered in Hardware, Software, OS, NOS certifications and for the life of me I can not figure out what the point in playing about with "I know better" would be.

Suffice it to say, that if a Computer Manufacturing Corporation and it's designers design computer cases and install drives on their side, it's a safe bet that it is acceptable to do. They are not into designing malfunctions into their products so they can eat 100's of 1000's if not million's of dollars in RMA's...

anyway...

back to being inane and mindless for me

I installed the drive on it's side (attached to the inside of the case) and haven't had any problems with it. It's a "freebie", pulled out of an old compaq, just using it to store "junk".

Try creating a removable harddrive that attaches to your USB or something like that.


How much slower would a USB drive be in ordinary useage?

I'm not sure what the diffrence on rate between USB 1.0, USB 2.0, and EIDE. If you knew those, then you can figure out which way would be better But he could use the removable as a storage not to run programs.

True, didn't think about firewire. I don't have that yet on my computer. Plus don't have anything that needs it. I got a bunch of USB hubs and plugs Not sure which version though
