shortcuts arent going to the right fence

This used to work fine but i was using it on windows 10, this is my first time using fences on 11 (in case its related).

either way ive tested this a few times now and i have program shortcuts set to go to a fence called shortcuts.  each time it ends up in my downloads fence which is downloads > downloads.

the only rules for downloads is 7z, exe, iso, msi, rar, zip

is it just skipping the .lnk portion and following the shortcut to its endpoint (exe) and putting it with the exe's in my downloads fence?

i tried changing the fence to another fence but same result, put it in downloads again.

worth noting the former was my experience with installing a program which created a desktop shortcut.  i also tried creating a shortcut manually and dropping it on the desktop, it just stayed there.  was put in no fence at all.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Can you post your Fences Rules setup, something like below.

Thanks

this what youre looking for?

tried changing it to documents and testing too, but shortcuts still went into downloads.  im at a loss.

If you disable rules for download, does it goes to Shortcuts? Also, how do you set those files type you mentioned above?

yes disabling downloads which is set like this

does begin sending it to shortcuts.

I think its flat out ignoring the fact its an .lnk as i just tested two types of shortcut.  created one from an exe > downloads.  created one from an .ico > media.  neither went to shortcuts.

bug maybe?  cannot see how it cant be.  i imported these rules via backed up registry from win10 and it worked just like this there but perhaps theres something im overlooking, dont put it past me :P

either way the behavior should be checking for .lnk and automatically sending it to shortcuts.  it appears it is looking at the name or following the shortcut to its endpoint.

Try Re-order your rules. And put the shortcut above of the download. That should send your shortcut to your shortcut Fences first before the Download rule applied.

okay, went through a bit more testing.   definitely something weird going on.  if i remove exe from downloads rules, it'll still send exes there and it'll begin sending exe shortcuts to shortcuts.

problem is lets use .ico for example.  i send those to a media fence. ico shortcuts go to the media fence, yet if i remove ico from media rules then the shortcuts dont suddenly begin going to shortcuts (and this would leave my non shortcut icos without a place anyhow) but it begins leaving them on the general desktop instead.

tried this forgot to mention.  i put shortcuts all the way to the top.  didnt change anything :(

it has to be looking at the shortcut target and/or not checking the extension for some reason.  im not a developer but this appears to be wrong.  shortcuts should be a check for extension > .lnk > shortcuts fence, full stop.

it is evidently checking it in some circumstances as evidenced by the removal of exe/disabling of downloads rule allowing it to function.  yet that only works with exe as removing ico from download rules on my media fence does not allow ico shortcuts for example to go to the shortcuts folder regardless.

Just  wanting to keep this from going dark.  Im a stardock fan but a bit perplexed on how something like this can make it a  year and a half without being fixed.

preeeeeetty fundamental feature of the software and its already seen an entire major version upgrade.

shortcuts are an oft used windows feature, never mind sorting being a huge fences feature.

You are seeing this in the current released version of Fences 5 (5.54), yes?

correct, latest version 5.54.

it's been present since fences 4 but i was just reminded due to having installed something that explicitly asked for shortcut to desktop (non-default) which i confirmed and watched it not go to the shortcuts fence.  I moved it there manually like I've been in the interim.

I read through this and see that this is supposed to be fixed with next version. I have 5.80 and it is not working. So is this referring to a version after 5.80?

Sorry, to be clear, I was making a new rule that would take shortcuts - or files with lnk extension, and move them to a Miscellaneous folder. That will not work.

yea was dissappointed to see no mention of it being fixed in the most recent changelog

Just checking and verifying, are you using the latest version available posted here: https://forums.stardock.com/529991. If you not yet, please do try this version and see if your issue still there. Report back here, so I can forward this to Support.

I was not using that version. I downloaded and installed and the new version works for the shortcut rule I was trying to make.
