Sins2: Epic Game Ownership is unknown error

When I launch the game i get this error:
"Epic Game Ownership is unknown. You must start the game when connected to Epic at least once before playing offline. If you believe that you have received this message in error, please view our troubleshooting guide. If the problem persists, please visit our support forums.

it then crashes back to desktop. Yes, I am currently logged into Epic game store and it is running when I click play.
I can provide my system specs if they are relevant, also I can't find the troubleshooting guide they mentioned in the error. I can't see the error window and the only way to get to it is to wave the mouse around until the cursor changes and then I click on it. All I see is the start-up splash screen.
