Commander ship role update

Can all the commander ship role change to capital (survey ship can keep support), specially on those provide fleet base ability?

Currently most of them are under Escort or Assault which easily damaged or destroyed in battle.

I think a better question is why can't we change ship role on a per-ship basis?  That would offer much more customization in battles and ability to hold a ship back in an engagement, etc.

The ship roles are rally confusing, hopefully theres a way to visually represent which ships/roles will hang back and which will take most of the hits.  I typically autofight everything

All the races have min 4 escorts some 7 so I think some alterations are needed with the commanders roles just for variety sake.

People playing Gal Civ 3 were confused by ship roles.  Since there is zero documentation/help in Gal Civ 4 it's no wonder why people have no clue.

This is the best link I know of for ship roles... little has changed in Gal Civ 4 if anything in this regard.

Yeah, you are totally right.

I will change it so that Command ship roles more accurately match their intent. This will mean many (especially the 2nd and 3rd tier ones) will become Support and Capital ships.

Please make them rather Capital than Support. Capitals can be protected by Escort ships. Support ships do not go to the front line. So they do not participate at a lot of fights (their weapons and upgrades of them do not matter).

  1. Hi, i found a good help for this little problem on youtube german, you can also build a super 1 dummy, which you then place next to every commander ship as an escort ship, this dummy is best packed with armor and shields and then draws the enemy fire at itself..., As long as this Eskord dummy has 1 HP less than the commando ship, all opponents will first try to destroy it, since Eskord ships are the first class that the opponent wants to eliminate, and then they always look for the ship with the weakest HP first. ., ;) When the Cargo Hull or Slice Hull Dummy is full with shields and Amor + 20% more HP with + 4GP, the opponent has enough to nibble on at first..., with 1-2 such commando protectors you can get very far without that a commando ship only loses 1HP, ;)

It's actually not set, there is logic that determines the ships role based on the upgrades, defenses, components, etc that it has. I actually modified the Commander component in both the Threat and Value dimensions, but not in the fortitude dimension. So it will be a lot more careful with them in battle.

If they fall into the Capital or Support roles depends on their other components (notably carriers). And Small ships (the tier 1 command ships cant be capital ships, so they are more likely to go to escort).

Since it is programmatic it may not be perfect for every ship. But it will do a much better job of evaluating their roles in battle.

I particularly like when there is a running racial theme to do with their lore throughout the commanders.  e.g. All the Arceans get a culture point, the Iconians are defensive, Manti all survey (looking for their children).  Xeloxi increase Crime.  Some races are particularly bland and uninspired in comparison, just having disjointed bonuses e.g. No slaver abilities for Drengin or benevolence from the the Altarians.

I digged into commander ship roles at *ship*.xml but I found nothing that would fit to the roles ingame. Now I understand - "it is programmatic".

My problem with commander ships becoming "Support" can be explained by my current playthrough. I am playing with a slightly modified Terran civ and I skipped "Victory" because it is "Support" and Hivebase has only a high value because of its fighters.

Looking forward to the next version.

It will be more enjoyable if the ship role can change after the ship is produced. Player will be able to review the ship role on each time before battles.

I always take Victory just because it's long range missile strike is useful, especially since it's missile attack value automatically increases every level.
