New Windows 11 Beta breaks Start11

Start11 breaks the task bar. When I tried to re-install it I got an error 103.

Thanks for passing this on. The current Beat will become the 22H2 production for the fall, so it is worth looking into.

I actually think the devs should be excited about this beta version. I think the fixes may be easy enough, but you will have to wait for an official response from them.

It also goes to show you why the dev channel is soo frustrating. Microsoft just spent 2-3 months making their taskbar more touch friendly. But with this update they completely removed all the touch friendly features that used to be present. So any devs that were working on making their third party software compatible just wasted a lot of time. This beta may be more in line with the final product, but a lot of trial and error happened along the way.

I suspect we just need to tell start11 that the newer builds are like the older versions of Win11.

It is another reason we do not officially support the insider builds.

It is a guess but I suspect the new taskbar stuff got scrapped as too little time to fix up for the planned release dates.  Would not be surprised if it shows up in dev channel again after beta and dev channel split again.

The idea of 23H2 surfacing soon gives me a head ache, and I'm not even a dev

Hopefully a lot of people take the off ramp and choose the Beta Channel over the DEV channel

Be even better if everyone took the off ramp back to release Win11 :)

For the missing system tray on the latest insider build, this can be fixed by adding the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

Create a new key of type REG_SZ with the Name "OldTaskbarOn11" and give it a value of 1.

Then sign out and in again.

Last night I took the update and then when the system tray didn't load, I uninstalled Start11 to get it back since I suspected that they were related.  I'm going to try and reinstall today (and use the regfix above), however I also may give a little time for things to stabilize a little too.

I think many of us expected (maybe falsely expected) the beta channel to be less 'flighty', but over the last six or so months, MS has been keeping both channels in lock-step (not exactly, but not far off either), so things have been interesting.

I have done the registry edit described and double-checked to make sure I created the key described here in the right place and with the right name and setting. Have even restarted the system. I still have no system tray showing.  UPDATE: I finally figured out the edit I needed to do. What threw me off was some terminology that was used in the instructions that were not technically correct. The edit will work, but what is needed is to add it as a string value under the final Start8 key.

hope this gets fixed up as I love Start 11. I am unistalling and try agin in a day or so. I also note that Fences no longer works on same build- referring to Windows Explorer 'didn't start properly'

Reply #8 does fix start 11 on Windows 11 v22616.1 for me.

What version of Fences are you using?

This fixes the main taskbar for me, but the secondary taskbar still has issues. The start button and time show on the secondary taskbar, but no windows show. This is true for all multi-monitor modes (show on all bars and show on bar where window is open). Anyone found a fix for secondary displays?

The dev has addressed this here, it sounds like it will be fixed next week.

I am also losing the top line ie file menu and minimise button etc on Edge. This is hidden behind the taskbar at the top of the screen. I have to reboot each time to fix for it for a bit

any thoughts?

Thank you
