Bought the game just after release and I'm struggling with this issue ever since.
When I click on multiplayer button in main menu I'm seeing no one there, like if something was broken. When I tried to create the game myself to play with my friend I couldn't change arena mode at all. If I click on the button, nothing other then arena shows up. The problem is exactly the same on his end too... Also I'm not exactly sure why but every time I get into game multiplayer game creation menu, the button for changing game mode moves from top to bottom and the other way around so I guess that is kinda strange to... 
 I already reinstalled game few times, checked game version, tried test edition... Antivirus is turned off, firewall isn't a problem... nothing seems to fix the issue from the things I mentioned.

This is a known issue.

About 3 weeks ago, the Devs removed the AI players from the MP mode, as the diplomacy with them was causing game crashes. Also, they removed the other MP modes, such as Sandbox,

My friend and I have a MP session once a week, and have had constant MP issues. In our last MP session on Monday, with V 0.99, we played 3.5 hours in a row without a single issue.

I am hoping that the Devs will soon add Sandbox mode back to the game, so human players will be able to play each other, to win on points,  without being automatically at war. Then they could add AI player capability back to the MP game.

Yea, now that MP is looking pretty solid, the sandbox will go back.

My friend and I have our MP sessions Monday afternoons. If you could please add the Sandbox mode into the MP game mode by then, we will give it a good 4 hour test.

Once the team comes up for air they're going to start testing it.
