Crash to desk top on keyboard input

Game is unplayable for me, as it immediately crashes on any keyboard input. No useful information evident in the debug log. Tried verifying game files, clearing out the settings folder, and reinstalling the game.

System information

OS: Windows 11 Pro

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900

Memory: 64 GByte

Video: GeForce 3070

Please post the contents of the debug.err file.

Also, click on my username on the left and send a private message with the email address that the crash reports were submitted with so I can direct support to look at them.

If you go to:

Documents\My Games\

and rename:

GalCiv4 to: GalCiv4OLD

And rerun the game, does it work then?

If not, is the GalCiv4 directory recreated in:

\Documents\My Games\

Also, something does not appear quite right... Perhaps with the Epic launcher and \ or the overlay for it.  Please make certain the Epic launcher is current and that the overlay (at least for testing) is enabled.

Fails on removing the GalCiv4 folder. It is getting recreated. I'll test updating the Epic launcher, make sure of overlay settings, and will let you know.

Same problem after completely removing and reinstalling both the Epic launcher and and the overlay.

That is definitely odd.  Are you running your PC as administrator (or default) or as a user? Crashing right away usually means something...system levelly.

Running as user., member of local admin group, not as built-in admin. It is not crashing "right away", though, the game is "playable" (mouse input works), but crashes the instant a key on the keyboard is pressed.

Is there anything…unusual about your keyboard? Is this a US English keyboard?

Razer Huntsman Elite,  US English,  nothing weird about it I know about.

Some of this might sound bizarre but bear with me...

If you use the on-screen keyboard (with your mouse), does that work?

If the Razor has any software installed for it and you disable it, does it then work?

If you have another keyboard and try it, does that work?

That's what I have. V2. Red switches.

So now we definitely have a mystery here.

Same with on-screen keyboard. Same with Razer software uninstalled. I cannot easily try a different keyboard.

Solved. The Trillian IM application hooked something GalCiv 4 really hated. Shutting down the application resolved the issue. I will see if I can find what setting / feature specifically breaks things, if I can.

That’s pretty impressive you were able to troubleshoot that. I can’t imagine how the two would conflict.
