Strange behavior when DeskScapes screensaver activates

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing an issue that I've experienced before and I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or has advice to fix my issue.   99% of the time DeskScapes just works flawlessly.

Long before I owned DeskScapes ( which I've owned a few years now), I utilized a program called K-Lite Codecs in order to install all of my codecs, LAV, and other general multimedia additions needed for various software programs.  I never experienced any issue in my past multimedia programs utilizing whatever codecs were installed by K-Lite, nor have I experienced any with my current multimedia utilizing programs now; save for DeskScapes.  Just to be more specific about K-Lite, I'm utilizing the Mega edition of it which is more comprehensive than any of their other offerings (there is a Basic, Standard, Full, and Mega edition).

Now that all that is out of the way, on to my issue.  There have been times when DeskScapes exhibits this behavior (on the screensaver) where when it's time for the screensaver to activate, the screensaver starts to activate but as soon as the screen starts to switch to DeskScapes, the screen blinks and returns to the desktop (or whatever program I have running).

I noticed that this latest time it has occurred, it was after K-Lite had an update.  K-Lite has updates at least twice a month.  A couple of days ago, an update occurred, and now I'm having the issue I described.   Because of this, I'm thinking it is K-Lite that is installing something codec wise that's breaking how DeskScapes is supposed to work.

Has anyone else used K-Lite and experienced the same issue?  If not, is this an occurrence that happens from time to time with DeskScapes (I doubt it).   If K-Lite is the issue, does anyone else use any other programs to install (and keep updated) all the codecs and LAV?

If anyone has any advice, I greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance,

Digicoma

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Although you should not need KLite Codecs , I use the Mega Pack too for years now so that's fine.

With it's Default Settings .

Now for your issue let's try this first go into settings and play with each of the 3 options

you'll fine one may work best for you and see if that fixes your issue ( see image below for the settings )

Media Foundation , EVR, or VMR-9 set on best Quality .

I use K-Lite Mega, with no issues.  BUT, I don't use the screensaver mode.  I see no real reason to use DeskScapes and a screensaver, since DeskScapes provides a moving wall, pretty much negating a need for a screensaver.  I mean, aren't screensavers meant to prevent burn in, by keeping a moving image going?  And since burn in is no longer a real issue, I just don't see the point.  Dreams are, in essence, a screensaver that works even on mouse movement.  Just an opinion.

Thanks for your reply.  I've shifted (initially) to using Media Foundation, and that made the screensaver come up, but there was no motion, just a static image.  I then shifted to DirectShow VMR-9, and the screensaver is behaving properly.  I want to test it with various DeskScape videos to make sure it's operational with all of them.

I'm utilizing a Radeon 6800XT as a video card, a Ryzen 5800X as a CPU, and 32gb of RAM, so I would think I would be able to run the most optimal settings.  I have a 4k monitor, so I should also be able to run the 4k DeskScape videos.

It leaves me wondering, knowing the hardware specs I have, which setup (in settings) would I would be capable of.  I would think there would be an optimal setup that would utilize my capabilities hardware wise.

Hi Redneck Dude,

First, let me compliment your MANY submissions throughout the various programs I utilize in Object Desktop (not to mention all the testing you do!)

I totally get what you are saying about the lack of "need" to use a screensaver in 2022.  There hasn't been need to utilize a screensaver with modern monitors in over a decade.  That being said, I'm not using a screensaver to prevent burn in.   My wife and I both use screensavers because we really enjoy walking into a room, walking up to the computer, and seeing an unblemished (by programs like Fences which I utilize and have slews of categories with many icons spread all over - and yes I'm also scrolling on some categories) screen with interesting and beautiful images until we sit down and start using our computer.   My wife and I have our computer "den" in a larger loft, and we both can see each other's computers while in this room.   We don't have the same schedule at all, and so when one of us are alone in the room for many hours, it's nice to have the other monitor showing and interesting and beautiful screensaver.   So I guess you could say, we're a couple of weirdos.  :P

I love that DeskScapes allow the ability to utilize both a motion wallpaper experience as well as a screensaver mode because of this.  I guess that's why they include the ability; because there are weirdos like my wife and I...   LOL

Not weird.  Everyone does things differently.  I just double click the dektop and everything goes away but the dream and the taskbar.

Glad it's sorted.

You know, that's a really good point!  I also at times double click, but not as an alternative to using a screensaver.  I'll have to think about that.  Of course there are also times when my screensaver differs from the wallpaper I'm using, but there are also times they are the same.  You've given me something to think about.

Thanks for your input.  It's always good to have a chat about what each of us do in order to consider alternatives.

Thanks!
