How much time does your system take to boot up??

system mechanic... my desktop is fast no matter what, but this laptop is in need of some help. So I run system mechanic pro v4 and I clean the registry of crap that gets added by temp files and other things that do not really belong in there anymore, you would be suprised just how much crap gets added without you knowing it. Then after it is cleaned I have it defrag and compress the registry on the next boot up. So I boot up and it defrags, reboots and then compresses reboots and loads up into the welcome screen and run like a scalded banshie everytime. I also run a ramsdisk that is 128 megs, when I run a graphics app it is the first swap disk, when I am not running a graphics app I run my temp directory on it for Internet Explorer, you would be suprised just how much faster it runs on the net from ram...

anyway...

Mine takes less time than it takes to fix a cup of coffee   Of course, I hardly ever turn any of my computers off ever, so I've never really paid that much attention to it.

I have just upgraded my CPU, Ram and graphics card and halved my boot up time

I'll time it tomorrow but my guesstimate for now is

~10 sec (power-on to login screen)
~15 sec (click on login icon to when TLP finishes loading)

Probably well over a minute.....Litestep in XP tends to load slower......but it's immaterial as last time I booted was over 22 days ago....

22 seconds. That is a full boot from the moment it starts to when I'm into my user and working. And I have a 13 character password in there so its pretty fast.

5 mins to boot up. My comp is on 24/7 unless something goes funny.

30-50 seconds. Most of it is the logon screen, due to XP and LiteStep not getting along (using Litestep instead of Explorer takes at least 20 second extra).

From the time I hit my power button to load fully: 29 seconds. Would be a lot faster, but I have so many things on startup in my system tray.

What are your specs Çërêb®øJÐ? Chickie, if you're serious I think something is wrong there.

About a minute and a half for me.

You guys should try loading old windows 95 on a newer P4 machine. boots in 3 seconds.

I would also say about a minute and a half. I have just so many resources that I unfortunately have to have. I will sure be happy when those guys at MIT complete their MRAM research! According MRAM research department MRAM will be as fast as conventional RAM but will be capable of holding information even when the computer is off. You could say that it would be like Flash memory, only without the drawbacks!

I've never heard about that, Raithe. Sounds like some very promising technology. The only downside to retention, I suppose, is that Windows would (naturally) clutter it up very well and then your system slows to a crawl. Isn't the sole reason we reboot our systems now is because there's a problem with something in RAM and we want to totally flush it? My boot time is about 20 seconds for everything, including loading the user. For all you users out there who use XP (doesn't work on NT or 2K), go to Microsoft.com and search for BootVis. It is thies weird little app that totally sppeds up load time. I don't know how it does it, probably something to do with prefetch and the MFT. I am serious, the program works. I run it once a week, and it keeps my Athlon boot time (to the Welcome screen) about five seconds. Give it a shot.

You can also do boot traces with it. Like, for instance, to find out where the most time is being used in bootup...Just kind of cool.

With MRAM, the people at MIT are hoping to decrease boot time by storing system resources only in the MRAM at time of shut-off, so upon boot-up your system would be fresh but also almost immediate. You are right though - I am sure Microsoft will find some way to screw that up!

You know, now that I think of it, I do believe that I have heard of BootVis. I thought that program was for developers to use for tracing errors during boot-up and system resumes. I think and don't quote me on this, but wasn't some of the algorythms from BootVis built into XP for the purpose of providing house-keeping tasks, to aid XP in decreasing boot time.

Used to be 14 seconds, it's now over a minute (at least half of that is loading DesktopX on startup)

I remeber booting up AT's at design school in the CAD room, 286's, you could turn on the computer walk outside talk with someone for a few minutes and walk back in to wait for it to finish. Then if you told it to print to the HP lazer you had pleanty of time for a walk down to the break area, get a cup of java, smoke a cig and walk back and it *might* be finished plotting, before it would print

and it was considered fast!

/me never sits and waits I fire up my machine go run do something go back click on the log on screen and run off again, go do something else and when I come back it's on so I don't know... hehe
