Scoring system?

(I just tried a longer post on this subject but it seems to have got lost - apologies if it now appears and this is a du[plicate)

The latest iteration with scores in the millions seems very random to me and I was wondering if people have some idea how it works.

In my last two games I played on gigantic maps first as the evil Krynn. 

With moves taking nearly an hour each I bailed out after nearly 30 hours on turn 162 with the Ascension Gate having 357 colonies ,2871 population, 175 citizens, 149 techs and got a score of  2.1 million

With the same game settings I thne played as the ineffable Altarians and took the gate after <10 hours on move 124:

92, colonies, 580 pop, 48 citizens, 143 techs - socre 1.8 million.

Any ideas please?
