Updated to 3.1.0.5, seems to have killed Fences

I'm updating several systems to 3.1.0.5.  All are Win10 Pro 20H2.  All also run Start10.  I do not use Wallpaper Engine.

The first three went fine.  On the fourth, the installation was routine, but after rebooting, none of the fences appeared.  Dragging on the desktop does not create a new fence.  When I right-click the desktop to bring up the context menu, I don't see the "Configure fences" item at the top.  Instead, there's an "Enable Fences" item.  Clicking it has no effect.  Tried rebooting, but got the same thing.

The start menu (Start10) looks ok.  But I have several desktop shortcuts, not in fences, that vanished as well.  I also have desktop wallpaper (just a standard jpg) that doesn't show up.  All I have is a solid background with no fences or desktop shortcuts.

So it seems that Fences failed to start up, but I don't understand why the desktop shortcuts and wallpaper are affected.  So I restored the system from a backup and got back to where I started.

Suggestions?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Thank you,

I've downgraded to 3.0.9.11 - Now it's working again - all Fences and Icons are back in the correct place.

Hey there,

Had the same problem, updated Fences to 3.1.0.5. Yesterday everything looked fine after installation, turned PC off, turned it on again today, everything was gone.
I navigated in the Explorer to "Desktop" and everything was there, looked for the pages setting in Fences -deactivated-. Left-mouse-button didn't work with Fences.

After purging and reinstall Fences, every Icon appeared on Desktop, loaded last backup and everything is fine and works again.
Just to mention: While purging Fences the whole Desktop became black. No Background, no Taskbar, no Startmenu, no actions outside of purging where possible. But don't panic, just restarted with the button the purge-tool offered and everything was normal.

For a tiny little bit more comfort, maybe you could include the choice to restore from found backups after fresh installation instead of offering "create your first Fences"-Tutorial. :)

Best Regards

Same problem here. Reverting to 3.09 restored functionality.

Thanks for the reply but, given the current chaos, I'm going to wait until you guys get the problems sorted out.  I also see that the "My Downloads" link points to 3.0.9 now, so I gather you've rolled back the 3.1.x versions.

I hope you'll send out an e-mail notification when it's all fixed.  The "Fences 3.10 Issue Report Thread" is impossible to follow, as there are several different problems being discussed and I can't match the replies to the problems.

I don't understand why everything from this developer is so difficult to use. Even signing up for this forum was a nightmare, had 2 Error 500 pages just trying to validate my email address so I could post for help.

IM DONE WITH FENCES.

This is the second time I've had to waste a morning sorting out crap from this useless program. I'm just organising my files into desktop folders with the names of the fences I used to have, and I'll click through to see what I need. Bloody useless waste of time piece of crap software.

To the rest of you fools like I used to be, enjoy your crappy buggy software.
