Surely |I am not the only one to have noticed that Mercury and not Venus should be orbiting closest to Sol?

No you're not. For those who don't know, it's:

1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune
9. Pluto and other minor planets

With the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Phew. I am not going mad. I am willing to believe extra small planets may be found, especially in the outer reaches, but it is inconceivable that Venus and Mercury could swap orbits without playing havoc with the rest of the solar system.

It's not just Mercury and Venus. In my game it looks like the orbit of Mars is slightly inside that of Earth.
