Recycle Bin

If you are on Windows XP, right-click on your desktop, go to 'Arrange Icons By...' and uncheck 'Show Desktop Icons'. This will hide ALL your icons though, including the Recycle Bin.

Yes, I'm on XP...but the recycle bin is the only icon I wanted to remove. I have five other icons that I would really like to keep

Perhaps I should consider adding those other icons to the dock as well...but if anyone else knows of another way to do it, I would appreciate it!

Inside, Make new DWORD-Value with the name "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" & 'Modify' Value "1"

To restore the desktop icon again, just 'Modify' the same DWORD-Value to "0"

Do you have Desktop X 2?

mmm...okay...so, am I to add that to both the NewStart and ClassicStart files?

Can you guess that I've never edited my registry files? Before you start laughing...how DO I add that line?

...this ain't good !! If you want to lose your 'Registry Virginity' over this then here goes:

Only one of those entries will probably show. Using Regedit drill down to the value listed above and change the "0" to a "1" and exit. You will have to re-boot for it to take affect.

The safest way to avoid a disaster is : when you get to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons' right click and hit export. Name it whatever you want and save it to a temp file. If anything you change after that gets screwed up just double click the saved file and it will restore original settings....do not change anything until you have done this.....Good luck.....

Dealing with the Registry is sorta' like a rite of passage......at one time or another we all get porked by it


BTW: I don't know what you have installed, so you may show both....try just changing 'NewStartPane' first and see what happens.....

My NewStartPanel folder has already 4 REG_DWORD files, and the Classic folder has none...but none of the current four file names match the one you mentioned.

ahhh....this is where the fun starts...leave 'Classic' alone. Change all 4 entry values to "1"

For each of the four files, under the heading DATA, it says 0x00000001 (1)

it looks like the value (in parenthesis) is already a "1".

This is because of what you have (and don't have) installed.....leave the 'StartPanel' alone and change 'Classic' to "1"

Name: {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}.default
Type: REG_SZ
Data: 0

I'm not using the Classic Start Panel...am using the regular XP Start Menu...but I don't understand how making adjustments to items in the Start Panel folders will remove the icon from the desktop.

Sorry for turning this into a pain!

Make the change in 'StartPanel'. Maybe MS doesn't know the difference between Desktop and start panel .......
