DLC partial install error

Just jumped back in after buying the retribution DLC but can't get the game to run

I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck. I've been playing off and on since at least 2006 can you help me out? (NB I don't seem to have a record in Steam of having bought MegaEvents or Crusade but I might well have done!

Try reinstalling direct x

I just checked and my direct X is up to date. I have downloaded the DirectX End-User Runtime Installer and it said all was fine. I used SFC and it found no integrity violations... Any other ideas?

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Are you running the game from a shortcut on your desktop? If yes, delete it and recreate it from within Steam.

Thank you for your patience and patronage.

Deleted the old shortcut. First tried just running it from Steam "play"button. Then created a new shortcut and ran from that. In all cases it launched the Stardock launcher, then I clicked on Play, then I got the same error message.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

As a test, go into the properties for the game, DLC, then uncheck the ones that are listed in the error (Crusade and Mega).  Then try to run the game from within the Steam client (not any shortcut).

If it runs, re-enable them and try again from within the Steam client.

If you mean the DLC settings within Steam, I can't uncheck the two rogue ones because (at least as far as Steam knows) I don't own them!

And I can't see where in the stardock launcher I could control this. I looked at the settings file there - it's empty.

If you go to:

\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III

Rename the DLC directory there to DLC.OLD then do a verify:

Does it then work after the files are reacquired?

The files were in E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III

Your fix seems to have worked. Now all I have to do is remember how to play! And mourn the loss of my crusade and megaevents DLC? I presume I purchased them direct and not through steam and that's why it wasn't picked up but I would like to have access to them as well... Unless the content has subsequently been rolled into the core game?

Now all I have to do is remember how the game is played!

If you would have purchased them directly from the Stardock store they would appear in the My Downloads section.

Most likely what happened was an error when installing with Steam.

I confess I am puzzled at the lack of a "paper trail" to my purchases but the files for both DLC are in the folder I had to rename to make it work, Wish my memory was better so I could be confident I actually bought them. But they're not that expensive if I decide to get them again I guess. Is the 2018 manual still basically up to date for what I need to know?

For the most part, the manual is good enough. There are also player made guides you can peruse.
