Still confused

My hang up is on the sliders.  no matter what i do they dont seem to change the overall map.  so I just make huge maps with everything slid to green.  Can someone give me guidance on what green red means?  I want a map that has mist of the planets connected, not several long strings I have to go out then all the way back in on.  Thank you.
