Don't The Measured - as one of "The Villains" of Star Control - have Malevolent as their starting Ideology? I guess there might be a "number" on the Malevolent to Benevolent Scale of Ideology (or however Stardock handle Ideology) that effects how quickly you can or even if you can change a Race's Starting Ideology.

As I only ever play my own Race, I'm not sure how this works, but that's how I'd be doing it if I was Stardock. For example, playing the Korath as a Benevolent Race just doesn't feel right to me... :)

if the civ played is a villain of Star Control, it makes sense for them to be Malevolent by default.  I also only play custom civs these days (and usually only against them too, I have plenty).  I don't have that DLC, as the first Star Control DLC annoyed me (it is the only DLC I have deactivated), but it does make sense for them to be hard-coded as Mal.

mhh - this new to me that an civ is "hardcoded" to an ideology .....

And have thinked the start is "neutral" and only affected by your action ....

musst check this .... anyway - have here upload the save file..

o.k. - The Measured start with Malevolent .....

this is at first an surprise - as the info text i have (in german) dont suggest it start as Malevolent

(and i have anyway thinked all races start with neutral - as the whole event system and especial the bonuses make not much sense otherwise... which would be sad, not the first time in GC3 ...)

and i have not seen an info that an ideology is "not changable" .....

So both would (if this not an bug that the ideology dont change) be nice to better explained - Example :

This Race start with Ideology X at Start and can only be hard changed/not changed at all....

[Edit] to clarify - i have no problem if an AI race start with an pre-defined ideology, but even then it should be in the info text shown - but an player race should start with neutral or it musst better show to the player which ideology start with.. and this make as writen, the whole event>ideology points system questionable in is current behavor ..

You're right.

If it's Stardock's intention that you can't change a race's ideology, they should make the ideology tree and ideology events unavailable or by still showing them, but automatically picking the ideological choice that the race - when played by the AI - would make in each event.

All civs have a default ideology they will follow (for the most part) when they are controlled by the computer.

Just tried a small test and my ideology is properly displayed.

Not sure why it is not correct in your case.

What DLC do you have? I assume the language you are playing in is German?

yea - can understand, if the races was by creation balanced with this "restriction" in mind (cant change ideology) ...

but then the ideologic points systemmusst addopted ...

for races that "can" switch ideology and start "neutral" no changes ...

for races that are pinned at one side - the choice should be for AI, as you say, pre-defined

for players it can maked "hard" to pick the "wrong" event by gradual decrase the points you get ...

as example : if the player play an race where is pinned at Malevolent (but is hopeful designed then with a little bonus if it restricted ..) then he get "normal" ideologic points for Malevolent event decisions - 50% for Pragmatic and only 25% for Benevolent

So the player have still the freedom of picking other things - but get an malus as its dont fitt his race ideology ..

@rhonin_the_wizard

In the civilization builder - yes .. but i have never build a civ self - this is not needed if you are happy with the available

and in-game i can look at this too (if the game alrerady running..)

BUT - not at game start if i pick a race - i dont see here dominant ideology, and still dont know is this changeable ..

so it is not an user friendly solution, musst first look at all available races in the civ designer and then remember at every game start which race have which stats here ......

btw.- have all DLCs and play german, yes

oh - additional - one missunderstand here is maybe my expectation that all player controled races start with an "neutral" ideology settings - this is as i have read here not always (and then the info is even more needed at race picking ..)

[by the "..as the info text i have (in german) dont suggest.." I'm referring here on the text shown at race picking - no ideology info and in the text self no hint it is a bad aggresive race - so if i dont have it played in the past or looked at here in civ designer, and remember it, i dont know which ideology it have at start..]

That AI races follow an pre-defined side is normal.

Still unclear if all races (player controled) "can" change here idelogy or not - and if he can, which conditions musst meet - have thinked the ideology with the most active bonuses is the "dominant"

Terran Alliance have Pragmatic as their default. I unlocked one trait in Benevolent and it changed to that one as my dominant.

You are not locked into the default Ideology of a civ, you can select whichever ideology traits you want if you have the points.

Dominant ideology should be based on the traits unlocked.

After a few more experiments I think I know what's happening. If an equal amount of traits are unlocked in two ideological fields the game doesn't know which to display, so it shows the default ideology.

If you were to unlock one more in Benevolent or Pragmatic it would show one of those, like in the picture below.

ahh - o.k. .... this make then the whole discuss over "locked" ideology obsolete ;)

Thanks to look into this (still an bug, but should be not to hard to kill... ;) )

(maybe use the last dominant ideology if 2 are equal - so no change to the last dominant, if not another get clear dominant)
