Stoke City lost in the FA Cup on Tuesday evening, in the third round replay versus Wimbledon. After the initial game at the National Hockey Stadium just over a week ago, manager Tony Pulis claimed his team were unlucky to have to face a replay.
The replay however, was a disappointing and sorry story, from start to finish. With only 6,500 fans passing through the turnstiles, the few fans that arrived must have been hoping for a Cup run to be proud of, similar to those of recent seasons.
It wasn't to be though.
The Potters were never really in this game, missing the star players Gerry Taggart and Ade Akinbiyi, and with Marcus Hall suspended, the team looked lost as they struggled to maintain their current run of form of 7 matches undefeated.
Stoke conceded a goal after 35 minutes, and never looked in contention as the match dragged on, during a damp and cold January evening. The warm cup of tea at half time may have warmed the body, but it didn't warm the hearts enough to inspire a fight back, as the Potters went down 1-0 in the FA Cup third round.
Manager Tony Pulis later apologised to all Stoke fans, for the performance of the team on the evening, admitting it was a "disappointing performance and result".
Wimbledon go on now to face Birmingham City in the fourth round at St Andrews, while on Saturday, The Potters have a chance to avenge the defeat when they face Wimbledon in the league encounter at Milton Keynes.
