Glitch on first mission to Triton

I can't play more than 1 minute of this game.  When I leave and head to Triton at the beginning, or anywhere else, the game stops and it zooms out and just pans and swings through Sol.  I lose all control except ESC where I can quit or start the nonsense over again.  As a founding member, I sure expected to be able to play more than 1 minute of the game.  This is totally unacceptable, and there has been no help forthcoming since I reported this in November.  What gives?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

and there has been no help forthcoming since I reported this in November.

Patrick did respond to you on the 27th (in the other thread) with what he thought may help (pending help with an update).

That said, to ensure you do have the most up-to-date core game files, please do a file verify:

If that fails, I would like to ensure that any UI / key binding / settings you may have edited are not the cause.  In:

\Documents\My Games\Star Control

Delete the settings.ini and try to get to that point again without changing any of the default settings at all.

Let me know if any of those solve your issue.

I did both of your suggestions.  It's exactly the same.  I get to Triton, the game zooms out and just spins through the solar system.  I have no control other than to quit.

Is there any possibility to create/post a video of this happening?  There are a variety of free video capture apps you can use to do this:

Also, what input devices are you using for the game (mouse/keyboard, controller)?

Finally, has this ever worked, meaning - you were able to progress past this point but no longer can?

Have you modded the game in any way?

I am using my keyboard and the built in touchpad.  I believe I was able to get further the one time I played after release.  I have not modded the game in any way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Create a save at that point or just before.  Zip it up with your settings.ini and runlog.txt

Saves:
C:\Users\sdrohan\Documents\My Games\Star Control\Saves

Runlog.txt + settings.ini:
C:\Users\sdrohan\Documents\My Games\Star Control

Upload them to a cloud drive (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive) and post a shared link here.

We will take a look at them.

When I save the game, it doesn't do anything.  No save file shows up in the folder.  If I then go to load game, the game I saved doesn't show up.  Also, the game freezes and does the spin out move that it does when I get to Triton after I have "saved" the game.  This is so frustrating.  How can it be this difficult to make a game work.  Best $100 I ever spent.  Star Control Founder eh.

Ok, that tells me something.  If you have this on:

Turn it off - try again (everything, even if you can start the mission).

Thank you for the response.  The option for controlled folder access is grayed out.  Apparently, you have to turn on the "real time protection" for controlled folder access.  However, real time protection is also grayed out because I'm using a different antivirus protection.  I tried to work around this, but can't figure out any way to get it where I can actually choose those options.  People are talking about that here:  https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e109471b-ff65-4b0c-93ca-e6baefb1719c/windows-defender-gt-controlled-folder-access-feature-is-grayed-out?forum=win10itprosecurity

So, now what?  I don't see any similar feature in my current antivirus.

The problem that I am trying to resolve is that the game - seemingly - cannot write to your:

\Documents\My Games\Star Control

Directory.  That is almost certainly related to Ransomware / Controlled folder access settings in Windows.

As a test, you can try disabling your current AV software (uninstall is better) and see if you gain access to those settings in Windows (no doubt you will).
