Start 10 Shortcommings

I like the Start 10 Modern Style, but end up going back to the native Windows 10 Start menu because of the following shortcomings:

  1. Poor presentation of Universal Applications: Start 10 basically punts when it comes to Universal apps and dumps them into a scrolling list—a very long list if you have a lot of UWP apps installed. It's not possible to organize these into folders. It may be a Windows 10 limitation, but still frustrating. The standard Windows 10 Start menu let's you categorize favorite apps into sections and/or group folders.
  2. The main Modern and Windows 7 Style menus also lack folders/sections. If you have a large number of favorite/frequently-used apps, a flat menu structure is limiting. Expanding the number of columns accommodates more apps up to a point, but then inability to categorize them in sections or app group folders becomes increasingly painful as multiple columns of productivity, gaming, multimedia, utility, etc. apps are all jumbled together.
  3. Right-click functionality, such as uninstall, is also lost.
  4. This brings me to the All Programs list. This list can be organized into folders (a process that is done outside of Start 10 in File Explorer). However, even here a key native feature is missing. Start 10 styles lack Windows 10's clickable alphabetized list that lets you jump to app names that start with the letter W (for example) with one click. Ideally, Start 10 would at least match Windows 10's native capabilities instead of reducing features.
  5. Finally, searching for programs is noticeably slower compared to the native Start menu.

P.S. I ran into what seems like a bug while testing features. I increased Modern Theme menu size to 120% of original size. After changing back to 100%, the app and menu name fonts remained larger than they were originally.

Update: I was able to work around the above issue by restarting Windows. Fonts are back to the original size now.

Edit: changed word from "went" to "when"

Worry not, the development team have read your post and are aware of your frustrations with how it handles UWP apps primarily.

It is worth noting that Start10's purpose in life is to offer the Windows 7 style menu on Windows 10 so we have to be careful when adding features that we do not stray too far from that and thus alienate those users who specifically chose it in order to keep something familiar.

I concur with your complaints. Fortunately I don't have a huge amount of UWP apps installed and I'm at 4K so no scrolling yet. However, I'd also like to say that the ability to change the color would be terrific. (unless I missed that somewhere) Having a dark theme then a blinding white menu on a 50"... is well... not so good.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Would like to suggest to use Start10 "Modern Style" for all black Start Menu or Use Stardock's Windowblinds and use thousands of nicely design Start menu. You can review it here -> https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/windowblinds

Thanks

Erm what? I'm specifically talking about the flyout for the Universal Apps. Is there a way in Start 10 to change the background color from white? I am already using  'Modern Style'.  Suggesting I use what I am already using is not helpful.

Thank you and appreciate you taking time for clearing that up. But, I don't see white menu on my Universal app menu.

This is on Windows 10 V1909 OS Build 18363.592, not really sure what is going on, but may I know what version of windows 10 you are running, use Winver.exe for full version numbers.

Thank you,

Okay so yours is black. Mine is white, the same is same as the other poster. Are you using a theme WHICH I DO NOT WANT TO USE, or is this a setting you can change in Start 10? I mean am I being that obtuse in my obvious question? I CANNOT FIND A WAY TO DO THIS NATIVELY IN START 10. DO I NEED TO REPEAT MYSELF AGAIN? From looking at your image your Universal App link is busted. Might wanna fix that. |-)

This is not an OS version issue. This a simple question.

No.

Not busted, I just removed all UA from my system since I don't need it there.

The reason I asked your Windows version is because of this.

It might relate to Windows version. Simple question. And I have send in the same question to Support Team for answers.

Yes, looks like Win ver is a legitimate question.

I'd been noticing oddities in some of my recent 10 installs ....and put it down to the simple pain associated with the current ms ineptitude....could even be as absurd as a home and a pro downloaded and installed on the same day being entirely different build numbers....;)

Is your audience of people looking for a Windows 7 style menu growing, stagnant or shrinking? My guess would be the latter. On the other hand, I imagine the potential customer base looking for a product that can enhance the the Windows 10 style is growing. I could be wrong. Also, I understand W10 may be less open to customization.

However, I don't see how an enhancement to the W10 style menu could possibly alienate someone who is using the Windows 7 style. Why would they be alienated by new features in a style they don't even use? o_O

18363.720. This was initially a clean install of 1909 a few months back.

So the first answer I NEVER GOT, is there is not way to change the  background color on the flyout correct? It is supposed to use the system light or dark mode as selected. Is this correct? Can any of you actually respond on point and intelligently for once?

Second, I am stuck with this GLARING WHITE BACKGROUND I cannot change....because????

So, I guess I get to FO and you guys "just blame MS"

Excellent, just excellent. Is there a more worthless forum to get a simple direct answer on?

How can I go back to my original Windows 10 startup.  I hate the Windows 7 look and I cannot find anything.

Thanks

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Select "Windows 10 Style" in Start10 Config.

So...just do keep this GLARING issues active, there's no fix or investigation into the Universal App flyout being a SOLID GLARING WHITE?

Will someone  answer that this is supposed to respect the theme settings for Windows and use the dark or light theme as selected?

Or  do I continue with the ridiculous  'just throw up your hands' and blame MS and 'it's just too complicated' Well?

How about an answer? (not from you Basj, you're as worthless as teets on a bulldog with your 'I don't have that issue'.)
