How to activate Sins of Solar Empire from code (retail)

Bought disk some years ago, it has a product code within the box but on steam says its not valid

I bought the game (from a shop) Sins of a Solar Empire between 5 - 10 years ago and played it from disk.

Bought a new computer without a disk drive and thought I would dust off this classic game. Tried to enter the product code on Steam but it says not valid. 

Is there any other way to activate this game. Without using the CD?

Thanks for the reply, no I didn't register it at all, just played from the disk offline. So I have the box, I have the little sticker with the activation code in the box but on steam it says not valid.
