Unable To Change Background or Background Settings

Unable To Change Background or Background Settings

I recently changed my DeskScapes background to an animated city landscape. There were no issues applying this background or the settings. A few weeks later, I attempted to change my background and now DeskScapes is locked with this background and I am unable to change the animated image or settings. When I make an attempt, even the preview image does not change inside the DeskScapes application. Nor do the effects change regardless of settings.

The above said I have tried deleting the local image of the background that is stuck. Also, I have completed uninstalled and reinstalled DeskScapes. None of which resolved the issue. The only next logical option I can think of is to completely uninstall the Desk Objects suite and start from scratch. I've been avoiding doing so as I use just about every application in the bundle and would like to avoid having to setup and reconfigure all the features I'm using in the suite as none of the other programs are having any issues.

Thanks in advance if someone has a resolution or workaround! If my description above needs more context or details let me know and I'll do my best to answer any questions!

Let's take a poll on how many people DS 10 doesn't work properly?  I'll bet there are plenty, even those that don't speak up.

How many times do you have to uninstall and purge then reinstall, or create a new user account only to see it still doesn't work properly?

I can live with the inconvenience of having to disable to change dreams, but I should not have to.

I'm not giving up DS 10, I will just run beta 1, which for the most part works ok.

Just look at ALL the threads on DS 10.

Start over from scratch and get this fixed. Call it DS 11.

Enough already.

When the issue occurs that you cannot apply a new dream, could you take a post a screenshot using Regedit showing this set of keys : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Deskscapes before and after changing to another dream file (which fails obviously)

We cannot reproduce the issue here (and we have tried!) and would like to narrow it down to if it is a problem decoding dream files, applying the dream or it not reloading dream settings.

I saw a report saying they could still apply videos and static walls from DS but just not Dreams?

Also as a note to anyone using DS10 b1, that will expire on Thursday morning.

Also is anyone having this issue running 1903 or 1809 versions of Windows 10?

I see a few screenshots showing 1803 which is out dated and could be a factor in this.

By having to disable Deskscapes what do you mean exactly?

In other words what do you do to get from one dream to another?

I assume this is with the release version of Deskscapes too as the beta did have some issues.

Upper right hand corner under the question mark, Disable deskscapes.

This happens with all DS 10 releases. Except DS 8, which will not run mp4 videos.

But what happens if you don't do that?

Can you preview other dreams whilst another has been in use?

If you apply another dream what happens?  What if you instead of applying a video dream you apply a static wallpaper or one of the included Stardock Dynamic ones like Desktop Earth?  I.e. does switching dream TYPE make it happy.

If you need more system info, here are more screenshots (Note - The deskscapes version is the last one I tried installing before resetting the display zoom to 100%. I was originally using the latest update):

I can preview. DS will not change to anything if I try to change dreams or videos. I have to disable to change dreams or videos. when I disable, the desktop turns to pure white.

If i am wrong somebody slap me upside the head. Most issues i see related are older windows builds. DS10 is optimized to run on latest build.(1903). Most W10 users are not having major difficulties. Maybe a legacy version that will allow all same experience. Ok that's my 2 cents worth. i am done now. LOL

Hi Dcrew57,

I understand, but I'm in Australia and when I run "Check for Updates" on my PC it says "You're up to date". So I don't know if the latest W10 ver is not available internationally for some reason but I'm stuck with Microsoft only providing me the version that I have, so at the moment I am running DS8 happily without issues.

When (if) I can update to 1903 I will try DS10 again...

Cheers,

dueWest

I guess in the end just need DS8 maintained for such users. I understand updates are different depending on location. That's my bad for suggesting you wasn't up to date. Thanks basj for clarity.B)

my point is they all worked perfectly a week ago. could something have done this in an update?

and yes DS8 works. whats up with that?

Is DS10 set to use MediaFoundation rather than DirectShow for videos in settings?

I suspect you have updated some codecs on your computer and broken the MF ones.

The general rule of thumb is never install codec packs, you don't need them unless you need to run older MPEG2 dreams and if you need those it would be better to find a codec just for that rather than installing a whole pile of others too.
