Strange E-mails

I received one a couple of days ago, that appear to be from Stardock................ lars@stardock, I think.... But I knew what it was. I'm not that easily fooled. Stardock doesn't send emails with the info in attached file.  

I got a really strange "returned mail" a while ago. (See Below) It was returned to [email protected] (My addy, but I didn't send it) I think jtfolden is a skinner, but I have never had any contact with him and he was not in my address list. I have run 2 virus checkers and cannot find anything. I also run a firewall. I deleted everybody from my address book after the inquiry from Starone, just in case. And who is "cs666857-166.austin.rr.com [66.68.57.166]"?

Does anybody have any clue what is going on????

I once had a wallpaper (not from WC) that had an embedded code in it that tried to contact the author without my permission. I only found it because everytime I loaded the thing, it would try and create a connection. I wasn't as sophisticated then as I am now so I am not sure if ant-virus/trojan software could find it. Once I realized what was going on, I deleted the wallpaper and the problem vanished.
There may be a wallpaper or a WB or "something" along those lines causing this event. I would suggest looking for such a culprit embedded in any if WC's Downloadables.

Well, I set the virus checker go through all files and it didn't find anything and no program can access the internet from my computer without permission due to the security settings on my firewall.

jebland: cs666857-166.austin.rr.com [66.68.57.166] is most probably the real IP address of the person who is infected by whatever virus tried to send itself to the email address that failed. They probably have you and other residents of this site in their addressbook or even in their IE cache.

There are nasty viruses that can grab addresses from various places and email out with your address as the sender. The latest one that's hitting most people is the Sobig-E virus.

Unfortunately with those viruses you can't contact the person who actually sent it directly to tell them they have a virus. You would have to check who their ISP is and contact them giving details about the time of day and the IP address the message came from. Whether they actually do anything you'll probably never know though.

I am geting in daily basis 10-20 e-mails with viruses!

About a month ago, I was receiving 70-140 viruses daily for a 2 weeks period!!!

I am still geting e-mails back that I never have send to Starone family!!!

I guess, we must learn how to live with all those attacks, which they have no ending!

I use a roadrunner e-mail for personal and a netscape for things like this place. you might wanna try. just fill out your spam e-mail for things like that. only my family knows my other

Recently my system was "hacked" which meant I had to build a new system, install a hardware firewall and loose almost a week of production. I barely make a living doing freelance graphics and the added expense and lost time was devastating.  The only trail I could find for the hacker was to somewhere in Herndon Virginia, plus another attack from a bogus company in Hong Kong. On top of that I get about 20 viruses and about 150 spams every day on 3 different email addresses. I'm just getting ready to leave for a week so I figure my mailbox will be filled in a couple days with this crap and real emails will get bounced back.

Basically, this ain't funny.  Now there's no way to tell if you're being attacked by some loser kid or the RIAA or even the government. They all seem to have the tools and the desire to mess with your machine. It's enough to make me want to quit using the internet. Disconnect my broadband and get some work done...

Remeber these two words, they're being removed from the english language:

Someday you can explain to your grandkids what these archaic concepts were....

btw - Nikos, I feel your pain...  and everyone else with this problem too. Having one's email address on so many websites opens you to the spam-n-virus spiders that seem so efficient at finding ways to nail you.

Koasati recommended I use MailWasher so I downloaded it and will try to teach it to be ruthless when I get back from my trip. The latest batch of spam I've gotten looks awfully hard to filter by the subject line. Hopefully MailWasher will do the trick.
