I agree. I use a dual boot system because most games and commercial software is made only for Windows or only for Windows and Mac. Very few commercial programs are being made for Linux and many software developers consider Linux to be low priority. On the other hand, there are many good open source programs for Linux that are free alternatives to the most popular commercial apps. For now I use both Linux and Windows for the best of both worlds. Linux Advocates must continue to spread the word about Linux to ensure it becomes as equally popular as Windows so we have the competition that makes capitalism work best.

yeah, but there are some that can play windows games, I think redhat can, but I haven't backed up my xp stuff to partition yet, so I don't know. lindows does though, and probably lycoris. linux users, help me decide: lycoris, debian, or redhat? I'm a new user and just want to see what linux is like so that I can buy a new computer, install linux, and understand. any other suggestions are welcome too.

"wine" is a program you run that allows you to run windows application, not sure about games though...

Very few games run anywhere as nicely in Wine as they do on windows.

i suppose if you like minesweeper its a great platform...

If you would like to try Linux without reformatting or partitioning your hard drive, then get Knoppix. Knoppix is Debian based runs live off of a CD-ROM so it does not need to be installed and can be used as a rescue disc. As far as Debian goes the only one I know of that has an easy installer is Libranet. Redhat and Mandrake are known to have easy installers. Mandrake is Redhat based and supports more hardware. Suse is known to have good graphics but poor sound support. I don't know much about Lindows, Lycoris, or other Window emulation based distros. I am not a big fan of emulation. I prefer to run Windows apps on Windows and run Linux apps on Linux.

I recommend Mandrake, but you should try various Linux distros and stick with the one you like best or works best for you.

Mandrake is good for newbies for it's easy istaller. I'm still kind of a newbie myself.

Redhat, Libranet, Lindows, Suse, and Lycoris are also known to be good for newbies. No matter which distro you try, you will need to be prepared to learn.

I think I'll do lycoris, then maybe I'l try the one that distrowatch says is good for newbies to get into linux details, and end up with redhat. kmfms.com suggests redhat. many people like redhat. I might also try debian, even if the installs slow. maybe on a new computer, I can download it off of another one.
