How do fighters work now?

It's been quite a while since I played, how do the different fighters chose their loadouts now?  It isn't clear in the tooltip for the fighter bay or the tech.

Awesome.  Which weapons of each category will they get?   My best weapons?  Basic Weapons?  Or my best weapons that don't require special resources?

They get your best weapons that don't require special resources.  Plus they get your best defense.  For example, I had carriers with assault fighters with stinger tech and shields, when I researched harpoons and durantium armor the attack went from +2 to +4 and the defense switched from shields to armor.
