Am I using envoys properly in the new minor factions DLC

Never used diplomacy much until recently. I can't figure out how to even start relations with a minor faction. I send in an envoy ship. It gets shot at and destroyed. Can't setup an embassy, only can use diplomatic immunity function. Where does Goodwill come in?

I'm not sure that I am even looking at minor faction planets. Names of the races on the planets are things like Herdunt Guard, or Kilebi Scabites, etc. Hovering over their planet i see status markers such as 50% allegiance, population, planet health and usually a negative tax income rate. This is very early in the game so i don't think they are allied with other races yet. The only difference I've noticed since installing this DLC is a lot more of these entities on the map

I am currently playing in the E4X mod with minor factions enabled, is it possible this DLC doesn't work in this mod?

Any advice appreciated.

The new DLC just came out a few days ago. Most mods, including E4X, do not support this feature just yet.

i need to know also. I have yet to figure out how to take over a minor faction. having NO FAQ is really bad

The minor faction's planet needs to be not allied with another empire for Goodwill to work - see the tooltip for the ability. If the minor faction's planet is allied with another empire send in your envoy escorted by some combat ships sand destroy the other empire's envoy. When the planet becomes a hostile neutral then you can use Goodwill to bring the minor faction onto your side.
