If you know what the fence is then you should know what icons are contained in the fence. Create the on-top window and replicate the contents of the fence in the window.

Yes.....that's called a 'dock' ..... but a dock isn't a fence.....;)

Technically it's only a dock if it's dockable - but I'm just looking at a technical solution to a problem.

Docks exist to provide access to icon shortcuts above existing open windows.  Those icons are not desktop icons....they are at desktop level by definition....and a desktop is always underneath windows...;)

True, but let's be realistic, it's really just semantics - the desktop itself is still a window and has been since windows 1 was released back in '85.

The original question was "could the fence ant it's icons float above the other windows". Nope, but you can simulate that in a way that most people won't actually know the difference by redrawing the fence in a AOT window that looks like a fence and acts like a fence. Which would actually be pretty cool as I often find my fences are obscured by other windows. Add a hotkey to float (duplicate) all the fences in AOT windows that aren't really fences but look like it to the untrained eye would be a huge selling point.

Quoting mhutch1478,

Having set up roll-up fences for a variety of folders, apps etc and then find that in general use, they sit on the desktop and unrolling them doesn't display them above other windows makes them pretty useless.

There must be an option to have them appear on top of other windows and/or accessible from the system tray.

Does anyone read previous comments?

Desktop Icons cannot be above Windows.  You need to blame Microsoft for their placement...;)

A Fence frame is a window that can be set to anything - e.g. Task Manager can be set to be on top of everything.

A standard Fence could to be set to a top most window overriding other windows.

Ability to set up an individual wallpaper for each of Fences desktop pages.

You can wish for this as many times you want, but it's still impossible as many people have stated already.

A desktop is not a window.  It is not free-floating and cannot do so.

You can 'simulate' all you like... but the desktop icons will not be desktop icons if you move them to a window of whatever type you want to call it.

They exist on the desktop level...that's why they are called 'desktop icons'.  It's not semantics...it's what they are.

You can copy/paste them to somewhere else...but you'll NEED to refer to them as 'somewhere else icons'.

You can build a fence for your sheep on your farm.  You can even build the fence in a tree on the same farm.  But you won't get your sheep in it anytime soon...;)

Microsoft disagrees with you about whether the Desktop is a window or not.

This seems to have deviated way off the original "can we have the functionality of fences and icons floating over windows". Regardless of how you refer to the "bunch of pixels formerly know as icons" (let's call them snoci, which sounds vaguely plural) you could still float the visual equivalent of them in the visual equivalent of a fence (lets call it a ecnef to distinguish it from a fence) and provide the visual and operational functionality using these ecnefs and snoci as you provide using fences and icons.

Ah....but a visual equivalent of a fence is just that...and it's  not a fence. It's all about zorder and what can and cannot move in a ms gui.😃

Generally most people have hoped/expected Fences to be capable of changing Microsoft's GUI Z-order where it pertains to desktop icons.

Invariably I have been explaining that is [currently] outside the purview of what Fences actually does.

That's been a constant criticism with Fences, along with the issue of being able to lock the placement of icons so they don't rearrange themselves - also an issue due to how they re-order when the Fence is resized/reshaped.

If there was some way to control both of those you'd allay probably 90% of 'complaints'...;)

Have to agree with Jafo here - free positioning (within a grid if easier) of icons is needed to enable easy visualisation of icon groups (usually by task or type). If this is not possible then a separator capability as a minimum is needed, although this still loses the benefit of spatial separation.

22)  An option to preserve 'hat' of  an Fence (where name placed) always near borderside (not move it when unfolding)

Uff... it's always a tedious task to place Fences near borders.

I suggest to have some options in right click menu or at fence menu at general, where you can choose where will be located HAT (with folders names), on top or bottm. Because currently it's like pure liky to get what you want. As I understood it have 90% chance that it will be bottom then top.. so it's always annoing to replace or even put it somewhere and get Folders names always on top, when Fence unfolding.

Example

Btw, for some reason in some cases it's almost impossible to put it like that (to 'hat' at the border side always), even if you do it with rediculous precise. So it would be easy with some option to lock it in basic position and not move when Fence is unfolding.

Another two ideas :D

  1. It'd be nice to manually set the fence size in both pixel and screen percentage. Would make setting up fences a little easier and you could guarantee equal sized fences would fit as expected
  2. Breadcrumbs..... No idea how you could do it neatly. Below is a a screen recording from Solid Explorer (Android file browser) where it works well.

I suppose the trick now with any extra features, will be to keep it more like an Aston Martin and less like something out of Mad Max 😂🤣

Cheers for a great app.

I would like to see the ability of enabling disabling fences with hotkeys. There are times I want to turn it off when wanting to game as not to get confused on Surround changes etc. At the moment have to do it by hand.

Fences does not seem to like multiple screen changes in resolution so want many ways to enable disable it when not wanted. This stops it from crashing windows explorer.

Unless I'm missing something. I would like the option to "maintain sorting" while the "none" option is selected. Every time my desktop refreshes (basically, every time I close a game), it rearranges the order I want to keep the games. It basically randomizes it. It's so frustrating.

Can you include an easier way of setting colors. More like Windows itself, where there are a group of standard colors to pick from or you can choose custom colors by using the slider bars. Some of us like to take the easier way out. OR is there already an easier way, and I have not found it yet?

It's been my internal suggestion to push some color controls to the actual Fences.

22) Re-saving files should not move them to new position and another screen

After some time of using Fences, I found that it don't understand that why some files was specially placed on some screen to have more order to work with, but after opening and saving any kind of files, it automatically moeved them to the MAIN screen... so you always after working should move them to the special screen again and again, each time... and this is feels strange and annoying Probably would be great if it somehow will be taken into account and always leaves Resaved files on the chosen one screen and on same exectly same position in the screen, where it was been before opening.

Or at least (if it was done on purpose for some reason) - give an option to turn this mode on and off. Because currently it leads to disorder, and useless repetitive actions

P.S. Here is I meant situation when you have files (not included in Fances groups), but places on different Fences screens

Can an option/setting to keep labels "frozen" be added so that when fences are moved to the top they are kept on top?

Or another way could be to allow snapping fences to snap to corners and edges and that would allow the label to stay on top especially when snapped to the top of the screen.

In some previous whishes(or it was in bugs) I have proposed to be able drop any file to the closed(folded) Fence. And only now I understood why it's sometimses work and sometimes not. Currently it works only for files that exist inside windows(like any at the Desktop that you will decide to replace to any Fences-portal to any other place)... but! If you will decide to move at once image for example from browser - to store it not at Desktop.. but at once at some chosen Fences-portal... it will always fail. Because when you hover over mouse - it unfolding, but when you drop the file - automatically folding, and that's why file drops to the Desktop. And only after that you should repeat action again(but now with fallen/saved file at the Desktop), but this time sucsessfully.

So my propositions is to be able drop any files from browser at once to any folded(closed) Fence-portal (sucsessfylly)

P.S: just curiousity, how often usually in general updates is comming?
P.S2: another thing I described here or in bugs (when resaved files always goes back on main fences-screen). So... problem occures not always, but only when you save file and at once close system. And after restarting - resaved files moves on the main fece-screen again.

I've had a lot of issues keeping all my fences all in there place epically with multiple screens. I've resorted to making one large fence with every thing in it. so I guess my suggestion would be "Fence Posts", a way to add a divider into your fence to further categorize items rather then making a separate fence. pretty much just a bar that can be labled

====================================APPS======================================

*app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons* *app icons*

====================================Files======================================

*files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff* *files and stuff*

like this lol ^^^

This would help people that that often add or remove a lot of things from there fences yet still want a minimalistic look (easier to resize 1 window rather then 5 separate windows)
