Steam purchased game locks up --becomes unplayable

Hi, Installed the Star Control: Origins on my Windows 7 machine via Steam.

Aside from the intro, whenever I try and maneuver the whole game freezes for a few seconds and then resumes, and occurs again a few seconds later.

I know my graphics should be fine, I play No Mans Sky and Borderlands without issues.

Is there additional installs I need for the graphics to play this game?

Otherwise, this game is unplayable.
