GPU overheating

While playing Star Control Origins

Hello there,

So this is the issue while playing this game, even lowering the texture and shadow details my system keeps heating up. Only 5 minutes after starting the game my gpu goes from 60cº to 90 ~ 95cº and after that my computer restarts.

And this happens only with the Star Control: Origins. Can someone give me some light over this ?

Thanks.

My system:

FX-8350 Stock Clock 4.0ghz (or 4.2ghz while in turbo mode )

AMD R9 290X XFX

Asrock 990fx Fatality

32GB RAM DDR3 1666mhz

OCZ 750w power supply

A shitty hard drive from 10 years ago

Windows 10 PRO

Star Control Origins GOG version:  V1.10.54010

Edit:

Ah yes, all drivers updated and ready to go.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with GPU temps. I've ran a XFX R9 290X in my other gaming machine since they came out and they are notorious for running hot. Even with the DD Cooling the GPUs in those cards can cook. With that being said I can suggest a couple of things.

1. If you haven't done it in a while, do a clean install of the AMD drivers. I generally do a clean install over an upgrade with graphics drivers due to some weird behavior at times.

2. Check the Global WattMan settings. I love AMD cards, but their target temps and fan settings aren't my favorite so I apply my own settings for them.

You may also check to see if the card is overclocked at all. If the wattage or GPU clock has been bumped higher than what the base clock is supposed to be from factory it will make the card run exponentially hotter.

Hey MindlessMe thanks for the input.

By clean install do you mean uninstall the current driver and reinstall it, correct ?

Correct. You can uninstall/reinstall manually or go into the AMD Radeon settings app and check for updates. If there's a newer update you can click custom install and at the bottom it gives you two options, install or clean install. If you do the clean install the utility will uninstall the current drivers before installing the new ones. I can't say for sure that it will correct the issue, but it's a good thing to try if you ever see weird behavior with a GPU.
