Captain's journal not recording non-story events

The captain's journal does not have enough entries.  Let me give an example of something that happened last night.  I found a system that the Mu'Kay use as a layover for deep space exploration.  And on one of the planets, I found a Not So Cuddle Drive.  Score!  (Yeah, I already have a Not So Cuddle Drive, but this one was free and I will be able to get it for free in my next play-through... I hope.)

Flipping to my journal... I found nothing.  No entry.

Events like this should be recorded.  If I was a captain, this would be something I'd record.  And yes, I want to take the captain's log and use it to build a speed run and a completionist path.  I can't do that if my journal isn't recording important events like finding a high-end hyperdrive for free.
