Are critters or critter meat needed for anything important in the game or can they just be ignored?

They are a pretty valuable trade good if you know who to sell them to :)

You can sell them at certain alien traders for RU.  I like to stun critters and sell them because they give more RU than most mineral types.

they might be valuable, but the return rate for the time spent is abysmal.

I don't even mount turrets of any type unless a mission requires them.

There is one minor quest that requires a creature be killed or stunned, but in general the answers above are correct.

The ones that sell for 200 RU, and some for 100 are good.  Others I kill when bored :)
