Constant Crashes on initial Load

Hello. Pretty disappointed here. Computer ungracefully shut down, and since then the game errors out each time I try to load my latest save. I have followed the steps from the troubleshooting thread, including changing page file to Windows managed, reinstalling directx, reinstalling the game entirely, trying a "clean start" with a new user account within Windows, deleting the settings file, and no matter what, it crashes the instant I click load. I don't want to complain too much, but I am not the only person having this problem.

Update - I tried to start a new game, which worked, and as soon as I tried to save it crashed. Currently unusable.

I am having this exact issue also. Froze trying to communicate with Earth, computer then rebooted, and now everytime I try to load into my saved game, Star Control crashes.

Hey - I might have something for you. Navigate to your save game files (in your documents folder, most likely), and delete the most recent autosave. In Steam, turn off cloud syncing on Star Control. You may have to do that before you delete the autosave.

That fixed it for me yesterday evening. Nothing about that ANYWHERE on here, but it worked for me.

Edit - Let me know if it works, just 'cause I'm curious!

We are aware of a problem with corrupted saves breaking saving and loading.  We expect to have a fix for that out soon.  Fivetad is correct on the workaround:

  1. Disable steam cloud saves (if you have it enabled)
  2. Go to your "saves" directory  Similar to this: C:\Users\pshaw\Documents\My Games\Star Control\Save
  3. Delete your autosaves

We are sorry that you hit this issue and are working hard to resolve it.

You are right about the save game.  We've identified an issue were Autosaves are being corrupted, which tends to make the game angry when showing the load or save dialog menus.

We'll have a fix in the upcoming 1.01 patch which should hopefully be public in a few days.

In the meantime fivetad's advice is correct, turn off the Steam Cloud syncing for Star Control (in Steam -> Star Control -> Properties -> Updates tab -> Steam Cloud)  and then delete the most recent autosave.  (Documents\My Games\Star Control\Saves)

It's possible that older autosaves have the issue as well.  In that case keep deleting them till it works.

Sorry for the hassle.
