Any way to dump unwanted cargo?

Many times while exploring I find myself inconveniently distant from a place to sell all my cargo, and in some of these times I find a treasure trove of a planet just begging me to take all its high-valued wealth.  However, my cargo hold may be clogged up with a bunch of very low value resources.  In SC2, it was a simple task to dump unwanted cargo, but I can't seem to figure it out here.  Is it possible?  If so, how?  So many planets and moons are just taunting me while I feel powerless to exert my dominance.

In addition to the home worlds and star bases, in the stars that appear larger in the star map you can find traders who will let you offload your stuff ...

Sure, there is always the option to go sell stuff and come back later.  However, that's a pretty poor solution.  Traveling out of my way to get rid of junk cargo?  That's exactly the sort of thing that I'm trying to avoid with dumping goods right on out.  For example, say I'm mining out a system, and there's just this one planet with a bunch of exotic elements.  By the time I get all the way to the nearest discovered trader to get rid of the useless stuff, I'm not going to go all the way back just for that one planet.  There's so much exploring to do in this game that something has to be truly exceptional to backtrack (read: not a planet full of resources).

To be clear, I'm not here and now trying to go after whether a functionality should or should not be here.  I just want a simple answer to the mechanical question: is there a way for me to dump cargo out of my hold, or is the only way to eject cargo to go sell it off somewhere?
