2 - 4 Minute Loading Times

Star Control Origins takes 2 minutes to load before displaying the AMD animation and then the intro movie. I will skip the movie to go to the Main menu. When I load a game save, I then have to wait 4 minutes before I can play. This occurs on multiple computers that exceed the system requirements:

  • i5 7600
  • 8 GB 2400 DDR4 RAM
  • 128 GB SATA SSD (Windows Boot Drive)
  • 1 TB 7200 RPM SATA storage drive (steam library stored here)
  • Radeon Pro RX 570

Other titles in my steam library do not take this long to load. When I check Task Manager CPU, RAM and Disk all have resources to spare. I have already tried verifying the game files and I am running Steam as an Administrator.

I had the same issue, running Netmon i found the .exe was making network calls for some reason.  Being in China, anything is pretty slow so i tested via VPN and I load in 2s instead of previous 2 mins.

I tried running in Offline Mode (my wi-fi adapter was completely turned off) and saw no change. 2m30s loading the intro, then 4m02s loading my game save.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

I would like to have you try excluding the folders that SC:O uses from Windows Defender. If you use another AV product, please use the folders provided to perform a like action.

Go here to see how to exclude:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028485/windows-10-add-an-exclusion-to-windows-defender-antivirus

The folders to exclude would be:

\Documents\My Games\Star Control
\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Control - Origins

Please let me know if this improves your load times.

Thanks for your patience here.

I just tried launching Star Control: Origins on a third computer (Dell XPS 8930 with 8th Gen i7, 32 GB RAM and GTX 1080 graphics. Both loading times were about 10 seconds. I have made no changes to Windows Defender. Moving the install location to an external drive had a marginal effect on loading times, not even close to the 2-4 minutes I am seeing elsewhere.

I just tried this on a third computer

Is 'this' what I suggested with Windows Defender?  I ask as this is confusing without more context:

I have made no changes to Windows Defender.

Thanks.

I have edited my previous post. By this, I meant load the game.

Here is a summary of the issues when I launch Star Control Origins on a three different PCs:

  1. 10 second loading times. Dell XPS 8930 with 8th Gen i7, 32 GB RAM 512 PCIe storage and GTX 1080 graphics. This is the first computer I installed the game on.  I even moved the game to a USB hard drive and it still loaded in less than 30 seconds.
  2. 2-4 minute load times. Custom built Gigabyte PC with 7th gen i5 7600 process, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SATA SSD (Windows Boot Drive) 1 TB 7200 RPM SATA storage drive (steam library stored here) and Radeon Pro RX 570 graphics.
  3. 2-4 minute load times. Another custom built Gigabyte PC with 8th Gen i7 8700k, 16 GB RAM, 250 GB PCIe boot drive, 1 TB SATA storage drive, GTX 1060 Graphics.

All three of these PCs are using Windows Defender. I have not yet added an exclusion for Star Control Origins. No other AV is present.

Hello,

I just wanted to let you know we are putting up an opt-in today that reduces the time to get to the main menu for non-ssd drives.  We are still working on reducing the new/load game times.

I just updated to v1.0.52822. With Windows Defender disabled, I am still seeing long load times, 1 min 30 seconds to load main menu and 3 minutes to load save game.

Update: I repaired my Steam Library folder and then uninstalled and reinstalled SC:O. Loading times are about 10 seconds now.
