Game will not start: crashes inmediatelly on launch [Solved]

Hello Sirs.

I'm seeking support to be able to run the game, as it just refuses to work on my machine. It crashes instantly upon launching, either normally or by "running as an administrator". It only displays the generic "Looks like the game crashed..." message , without any information that would let me troubleshoot the problem.

I have done all that's instructed on https://forums.starcontrol.com/491043/star-control-origins-support-faq (at least everything that applies to me, as the instructions are biased heavily for steam users and I purchased and installed directly from GOG myself).

Also, my PC meets the minimum requirements.

What else could I try?

I'd appreciate any advice or help anyone can provide me.

Best regards.

Hello psupmocis,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

In looking at your crash logs, something is odd with your video card situation.  Of the three logs I reviewed, your video card was listed as:

--------------

Card name: Microsoft Basic Display Driver
Display Tab 1: There is a problem with Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 device. For more information, search for 'graphics device driver error code 22'

--------------

Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family

--------------

Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 630
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation

--------------

All seemed to have the same driver date:

Driver Date/Size: 10/16/2017 7:00:00 PM, 65449872 bytes

Have you had trouble updating your video drivers here as noted in the FAQ?

Please let me know.

First of all, thank you very much for your reply.

Your response takes me a step in the right direction: now at least I know where to start.
For some reason, this computer came with two video cards, one Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 for everyday non-demanding use, and an NVIDIA Quadro P5000 for gaming and more demanding tasks.

Usually, when I launch an application or game, windows switches seamlessly between the two as needed, or, I can go to my Display Settings and force select one of the two. I have selected my NVIDIA Quadro P5000 for StarControl_DX11.exe.

Another thing I can usually do is go to my Device Manager and disable the Intel card so I that the NVIDIA one is used for everything.

I have done both of the aforementioned, so the game shouldn't even be detecting the intel card.

Hope this helps. I am grateful for any advice you can give.
Best regards,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't have steam at all. I purchased the game from GOG, and I used the option GOG provides of downloading and installing directly (not using their client).

Can you post a link her to you  runlog.txt from:

\Documents\My Games\Star Control

To a cloud drive (Google Drive, OneDrive, DropBox, PasteBin)?

Also, 1.01 should be available for GOG in a day or so (out for Steam now) and I would like to see if that addresses your issue.

I would ask if you did the entire Support FAQ as many skip the 'clean boot' at the bottom.  We get that it is not all that fun to do but it does really help eliminate a lot of what could be causing issue.

Thanks for your patience here.

I don't know how to thank you, the clean boot thing fixed my problem.

The game runs now.

And as for the log you asked me to post, I get that this is now a moot point, but just to give you all the info I can: there was no \Documents\My Games\Star Control folder with the old windows user I was using (the game crashed even before creating the log, I guess?) but there is now on the new user I created when I followed the clean boot instructions on the FAQ.

Anyway thank you for all your help, your time and your patience.

Best regards
