Multiplayer WAIT on 1st turn

2nd player never gets to do anything

A friend and I have been playing co-op vs  AI ages (GC2).  Currently we have v3.04 installed from Steam.  All DLCs thanks to a sale same months ago.

Over the past 2 weekends we've been unable to get a game going.  One of us will start one and the other will join.  The first player starts the game, plays their turn and be hits the turn button and ... nothing.  The button changes to WAIT and nothing else every happens (we've waited up to 15 minutes).

We've tried playing on 2 Win10 machines and on 1 Win10 & a Win7 machine.  We've tried starting already allied (Team 1) and as not allied from the start.  We've tried with our custom races and with nothing but stock races.  We've tried with a variety of map sizes & configurations.  We've tried with a few AI races and with up to 12.  If doesn't seem to matter ... When the first player, the one who set up and started the game, hits the TURN button it changes to WAIT and eventually we give up and exit the game.

Neither of us have installed any new s/w on the 3 machines we've tested in.

Randsomware protection is off in the W10 machines.  We've tried disabling at AV s/w (Windows Defender & Malwarebytes Pro).  We've confirmed the pagung files are system controlled.

There has never been and indication of permission errors in any of the Event Viewer logs.

The .err file had never shown any indication of an error.

As recently as 3 weekends ago we had 2 great, long games.  Now however ... any other ideas for troubleshooting?

I would change the paging files to 3x your ram.

What are your machine specs.

His machines have 16GB of memory.  Mine has 64GB ... a 192GB swap file would be a little overkill, don't you think?  Heck, with 64GB of main memory, I rarely use the swap file anyhow! 😉

Son of a gun.  I created an Exception for GalCivIII.exe in MalwareBytes today and ... nearly 8 hours of successful co-op playing!! 8C

I'm changing my response to the multiplayer takes a long time to load, and when it is first set up it seems to take long while like an hour to get the first turn started. We have to save on the first turn, and reload the game. It seems like we can only play a few turns on mu;tiplayer before it crashes again.

What I am about to suggest is in line with what Psklenar.  Please see this post for excluding things from Windows Defender (any AV app you use should be repeatable):

Thanks for your help and patience here.

Yeah, I've used MalWareBytes for years and never had an issue.  There were now entries in any of the MalWareBytes logs.  But, when I searched thru the app and saw the "Exclusions" option, I tried adding GalCivIII.exe and then the multiplayer started working again.  Since GC3 hasn't been updated since June (v3.04, we don't play the beta versions), it must have been a MalWareBytes change that made it start blocking GC3. <shrug>

Working well now tho.
