I'd think it would be tough to chase an image color...

Actually, and for curiosity's sake, it isn't that difficult. You just extract the dominant color of the image, and that will work most of the time.

For instance, Winstep has the ability to automatically colorize the current theme (and in the next release even the icons themselves) with the dominant color of the current desktop wallpaper background. It does this by basically adding all the colors in the wallpaper image (ignoring the grays) and then dividing the result by the number of pixels the image has - the result is/should be the color most used (dominant) in that image. Of course, this means the source image must be scanned pixel by pixel, but several tricks are employed to make sure this is a very fast operation.

This is also how the Hue colorization method works: the Winstep application first determines the dominant color of the background bitmap you are trying to colorize and then shifts the hue of the whole image so that the dominant color in the target image is now the same as the tint color (this also affects other colors, of course, but at least color information is preserved). For background images this works a lot better than the Tint method, which simply gray scales the image (thus losing all color information) and then applies a tint.

And since we are talking about colorization methods, you should use the new Tone colorization method when - and probably only then - colorizing black & white or gray scale bitmaps (e.g.; like the background bitmaps in the DarkTech theme). It's the only colorization method of the three (Tint, Hue, Tone) that actually changes the color of solid blacks.

Actually, I didn't know that. But I do now, thanks, Jorge.

Feature request:

I usually disable the voice for the time because......nine......o'clock......am......there's usually a few second lag in between (indicated by the dots). If that lag can be eliminated that would be a good thing. Also the sound that goes with emptying the recycle bin. How about a sound that resembles the bowl being flushed. And the explosion when removing an icon from the dock. Why not a mushroom cloud like the icon gets nuked. Just a thought.

The sound files are indeed separate, so there can be a very, very, short fraction of a second pause between the words. However, if it is indeed 'a few seconds' then something is very wrong in your system.

Ask the others if it's like that for them. :)

You can set it to whatever you want:

WorkShelf Preferences > Sounds tab -> Select 'Empty Recycle Bin' event -> Browse for a sound file.

There are also other Sound Schemes available.

Ross, while a mushroom cloud is not among the available options, you have plenty of other delete effects. In fact, you have twenty something different effects for mouseover, launch, attention and delete.

So, just open that dock's Property dialog (click on an icon -> Nexus -> Dock Properties) then go to the Effects tab and change the Delete effect to whatever you want.

Since effects are dock/Shelf specific, you have to do this for each of your docks, shelves, etc...

I played with all them things. I was just thinking something different. As for the sound my laptop is not the fastest in the world. Its three years old and Win 10 did slow it down a bit.

I installed the basic Nexus Dock on three Win 10 machines in the last couple of days. Not sure if I need the deluxe version, but the startup issues with OD are gone and Nexus is snappy. Thank you!

Thanks, Michael.

Since you're running Windows 10, did you already enable the Fast Boot option (the gray power icon that appears by default in the dock) ?

If you reboot a lot it's important for you to do so (mousing over the icon and reading the ballon tooltip that pops up shows a more detailed explanation) but essentially Microsoft delays the start of 3rd party applications by several seconds after a reboot - the Fast Boot option bypasses this delay, which makes Nexus pop up at the same time as the Windows desktop.

Knowing things like that is probably how you do what you do so well. :)

Love the new vertical shelves by the way.  First thing I did was load one of those puppies up.

Did you try the new Drawers already too? They're gonna get a bit thinner in the next release (and you can make them thinner even - or fatter, if that is your thing    )

Do the drawers come with knobs or handles. Just askin'. :-"

Handles. Just like windows. B)

There's a Winstep Xtreme promotion going on right now at the Winstep web site, just in case someone reading this is still sitting on the fence regarding getting it. :)

Small heads up: v18.10 will be released tomorrow (October 9th) and on the 12th Winstep will increase the prices of all it's applications and subscription renewals. Read more about it HERE.

Among many other things, v18.10 supports icon colorization, centering of icons in the Shelf (tabbed dock), and manual scaling of menus up to 200%.

The brand new Winstep Office theme will also be updated after the v18.10 release with a skinned calendar, battery and moon phase desktop modules, brought to you by our very own Mindy. :)

Picco should also be glad to know that the zodiac sign issue in the Moon Phase desktop module has been fixed and that the module now supports theme customized zodiac images as well (perfect for his Winstep Kal-El theme).

So I should run over there and get it, right? BTW: I tried the media player in Winstep and it doesn't do mp4's, the music vids I got. Only mp3's.

It was just a quick run to the store. No biggie.

The theme or the new release? If the latter and your Winstep Update Manager hasn't picked it up yet, just open Preferences and click 'Check for Updates' to force a manual check.

Yeah, the built-in Media Player was never intended as a full blown Media Player, just as a very convenient and unobtrusive way to listen to some music while you work on other stuff.

LOVE THE DRAWERS ! :-)

Some issues with the Drawers:

- 'Sort alphabetically' sorts the shortcuts from right to left or if it is meant from left to right descending.

- If I choose not to show the icon descriptions it should free that space, not reserve it nevertheless

- I cannot add new content (new tab ?) to a drawer, all buttons are greyed out

That's it for now. :-)

That's by design. For a Drawer at the left screen edge, icons go from right to left 'into' the screen edge, that is, the first icon is always the one closer to the tab.

And it does free that space. Anyway a screenshot with and without would be nice for me to understand what you are seing.

Also, exactly what setting are you using not to show the icon descriptions/labels in the Drawer? Should be Drawer Properties -> Appearance -> Set 'How many lines of text...' to 'No label'.

Quoting c242, reply 120

Unlike a Shelf, which can have multiple tabs, a Drawer by nature only has a single tab and you cannot add more. If you want something with several tabs, use a Shelf instead.

Now, Drawers actually used the same code as Shelves (you can say it's a Shelf in a different mode). Because of this, they also use the same Property dialogs, where the word 'Shelf' is replaced by 'Drawer' and some specific settings are modified, removed or disabled.

In the case of the Contents tab, I played with the idea of actually removing the 'New', 'Insert', etc, buttons by making them invisible (as they only make sense when dealing with Shelves) but that looked a bit odd. In retrospective, if it confuses users perhaps I should make them invisible or simply use a different dialog altogether.

Thanks, but you never need to buy it brand new after having it done once, Ross. Once a Winstep customer, always a Winstep customer - you can always renew at the reduced price even if it has been years since your last renewal. Just send an email to Winstep support for the renewal link. :)

That's great to know.  By the way, I'm thinking instead of renewing my Nexus Ultimate sub I might move to Winstep Xtreme; don't know if the discount would apply in that case ( ? )  Cheers

No. You would simply pay the price difference between the two products (but you're already saving some money on the renewal by doing this, as the Xtreme license key will be good for a year of free updates).

There's a button in the About tab of Nexus Ultimate you can use to upgrade to Xtreme - just make sure to read the upgrade instructions in the email with your new Xtreme license key!

All makes sense to me and I solved the space problem myself. :-) Can You consider to have an option for the order of shortcut sorting in the drawers though ?

Not sure that would be something relatively easy to implement, or even if it would make much sense in the case of Drawers. Will look into it though. :)
