Group doesn't work at all

I tried Groupy for the first time with just 2 windows folders, I save the group, when I try to load the group I get this message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I then have tried several different groups, uninstalled/reinstalled the program, wiped windows 10 and reinstalled win 10 with a fresh installation of Groupy, I still get the same error.

I am using windows 10 Version 1709 64-Bit.

I click on the 3 stacked dots next to the “x” icon by the opened tab furthest to ththe right and select the option the load a save group and select the group I created.

Could you paste your saved groupy file.

You can get to it via 3 dot menu -> Saved Group -> Manage Save groups. Open that save group with notepad, copy and paste that text here..

This is what it looks like:

[GroupyEntry1]

OwnerProcess=C:\Windows\explorer.exe

RunElevated=1

Target="C:\Users\Administrator\Documents"

MatchingClass=CabinetWClass

[GroupyEntry2]

OwnerProcess=C:\Windows\explorer.exe

RunElevated=1

Target="C:\Users\Administrator\Pictures"

MatchingClass=CabinetWClass

[Group]

GroupCount=2

GroupLeft=426

GroupTop=7

GroupRight=1565

GroupBottom=886

GroupMax=0

I tried wiping my computer and reinstalling again, it didn't do anything.

Thanks for the reply but that did not work unfortunately, I still get the same error.  I am using the latest version.

I should clarify, Groupy does in fact work, I can make tabs and it work fine.  It is just when I save a group and try to load that saved group that I am getting this error.

Okay... I've pushed your problem to the support team for their review and recommendation. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks.

Is it likely that a solution will be found? I see another thread from around March and another support person said they would forward it to the support team and there hasn’t been a response since March.

I really like this program and want to use it but can’t use it properly while this error persists.

I notice all your entries say RunElevated = 1

Have you disabled UAC on your system?

Reply #13 Top

I don’t recall ever doing that during he reinstallation of Windows. Although now that I think of it I am never asked to allow a program to install whenever I installed my programs since my fresh install.

A little more info, I created my clean install disc with ntlite and part of the unattended setting was to create a local “built in administrator” account which I know has different properties than a standard administrator account which explains why I don’t get any UAC messages when I install programs.

Could this be my problem? I am not in front of my computer now but when I get home I can create a new install cd using a standard admin account instead of the built in admin account and see if it works.

Please try it. If Neil was asking about it. It most probably something to look into.

So I tried again with a normal user account and still am getting the same error.

Although, I manually edited the preset and changed the value of "RunElevated=1" to "RunElevated=0"  and it worked.  I guess I could manually edit all presets I create, I just don't get why this happens in the first place.

Great, Hopefully Neil can come along and have some idea on what could be the problem. I'll forward your problem to the Support team for input. Thanks.

Is there any reason why "RunElevated=1" would be used instead of "RunElevated=0”? If not, would it be useful to release a minor update to hardcode "RunElevated=0" so that way admin users don’t encounter this error?

Reply #19 Top

The issue is the disabling of UAC I think.

Run elevated is set to 1 if the application has been launched as full admin as it would be needed to relaunch it correctly from a saved group.  But with UAC disabled the OS no longer allows this which is why issues are happening.  UAC disabled is an extremely rare (and rather unwise) setup.

We will see if we can detect UAC being set to off in a future update to avoid this issue.

Thanks for your help! I am glad that it works now and that I can use the saved groups!

Does not work for me at all.  I saved a group consisting of an excel spreadsheet and a word document.  After trying to figure out how to even get back to the groups (really, people still use File Explorer?), I tried opening the one group ... and nothing.

So, as handy as it might seem, if it doesn't work, it isn't worth anything to me.  It will be deleted.  (Oh, and please stop trying to bundle Fences into everything.  I tried it before, and I'm really not interested in trying it again.  Thanks.

Sorry you had some trouble...

Groupy does indeed work, and is very popular at the moment, but I would like to know why its not working for you.

Should you change your mind, and want to work on any issues, please let us know.

I am happy to know it works.  However, it did not work for me, and the documentation for it seems to not exist.  I've uninstalled it.  Perhaps when it is more stable and better documented I will try it again.

Have the same issue, actually i just uninstall it...about to make a reboot and reinstall it when i read your answer about UAC.

Ive disabled UAC myself too to stop it from busting my balls about running things every single time.

There no way to return to that nightmare named UAC, any recommendation except  re-enabling it?

Thanx in advance

As the others had noted, manually editing the save groups from:

"RunElevated=1"

to:

"RunElevated=0"

Would solve saved grouped issues with UAC off.
