Hi, How can I define a view for a folder portal that propagates through all its sub-folders ? I want detailed view, and have to keep setting it at each folder level ...

thanks.

It is being looked at as a feature.

I also want this feature. Very frustrating to have to set it over and over for each folder. Fences Folders should default to Default View set by user in Folder Explorer>View>Options>View Tab>Apply to All.

Please include this feature ASAP. Thanks

Bumping this thread.

Any update on this?  I've confirmed that browsing (drill-down) to a new (not loaded in a folder portal before) folder adds 5 entries to the registry at HKCU\Software\Stardock\Fences\ViewStates.  It seems like this should be a relatively easy feature to add.  Each time the entries are created, they use the same defaults.  There are obviously default values used for this somewhere in Fences, please just give us an option somewhere in the Fences config window to set the default layout.  I use Details (Large) for almost everything.

There are a few common software repos I'd love to mount in folder portals, but currently, every time I drill down it switches to the icons view which is incredibly annoying.  I'm a software developer and repos can have hundreds/thousands of nested folders.  It's not practical for me to go through every folder in a repo and set the view states.  Personally, I could write a program or script to watch the directory trees I'm interested in and add my own default viewstate entries into the registry ahead of time, but that's a stupid hack, and it only "solves" the issue for me, not everyone else that wants this feature too.

Some people have requested the ability to set defaults for different folders and have them propagate.  When browsing to a folder, it would also be simple to scan this reg key for the closest 'parent' folder, to apply those same view settings.  Obviously I don't know your codebase, but from what I've seen so far, adding this feature appears on the surface as if it would be fairly straight forward.  Considering I've seen requests for this feature dating back to 2015, this appears to be a highly desired & requested feature, so I'm surprised it still hasn't been implemented in over 5 years.  I just don't get it!?!

I strongly agree. Folder portal as it is, doesn't make any sense and it's a meaningless feature. Am I supposed to manually change the view on a tree of more than 1000 subfolders?

First time poster, long time stalker of this page. I emailed Stardock support and was asked to come back here and ask for help... Anyone know of any other software other than Fences that does what we're looking for?

Alterntaively, is there a registry fix?

Thanks :cylon:

Hello,

I am new to Fences and so far I love it but it is incredible cumbersome to have to change the view to details every time I enter a new folder from my portal. The reason that I have these portals is because I am constantly navigating paths and want to reduce the amount of time that it takes to navigate these paths.

Can we get an update on when this feature is going to be implemented?

I agree.  This is super annoying and greatly diminishes the value of the "folder portal" in the first place.

I've resorted to just turning off "allow navigation" in the view settings, so really the "folder portal" only gives me access to the top level directory that I mapped.  From there on out, it opens an Explorer window and I just navigate there.

The only reason I still use "folder portal" instead of just a Windows shortcut is that I like the "roll up" feature and keeping my folder portals "docked" to the top of my desktop.

This can't be that hard to add to the code.  It's already loading default view settings from somewhere.  At the very least, poll your users to see the most common View setting and then make that the default.  I bet its "List" or "List (Large)" or "Details (Large)"

Can't someone at Stardock just take a day and fix/add this?  I would think more hours have been wasted by all of the users manually changing the view settings for all these folders, than it would take for one person at Stardock to make these changes in the code.

I have been a FENCES user since 2015, this product has amazing potential but it's JUNE 2022 and unfortunately, they still have not made any changes. The only updates they made is change the version number. But once you open it, no changes. Clearly FENCES is no longer supported or updated by the company, just a tool to collect whatever money they can at this point, with the as is product they have (like an old outdated used car).

If anyone knows of other software, please share. Thank you.

PS. And when the product crashes, (to which it does regularly) their solution to everything is to reinstall. LOL!!!!

Does that happen while you have the current beta installed, LinoKid?

Sean.  Please implement this.  It should be simple.  If not, at least tell us why and maybe one of us  has already tackled similar challenges and can offer up solutions.

It should be simple.

If only...

That said, it is on the roadmap to be looked at.

Thanks for the feedback, rjanders.

Hey Sean,

Its been 5 years since I posted this request - how long are your roadmaps generally ?

I am assuming now that this feature will not make it so no expectations from my side - but would be interested in understanding the process of prioritizing an enhance request submitted to Stardock.

Thanks.

I would if I could elaborate but all I can say is it is a feature we are looking into.

First things first.... YOU HAVE A GREAT PRODUCT!

WITH THAT SAID, it is important to keep in mind that your customer base is pretty much the select group of users who are "Picky" about their desktop presentation, so, we as a group are highly sensitive about product features and operations.

With respect to the folder portal features requested in this thread, the addition of a feature to allow folder portal view setting to apply to all subfolders is crucial.  Without this feature, the folder portal option is pretty much valueless to the user and only creates frustration.

Hope to see this added in the next update.

Thanks

Using Fences since 3 days. Great so far ... but now landed here. Same for me => have main folders with up to 50 subfolders and need detail view there  :-(

So now I will remove the folder fences from my desktop and get back to Win explorer to mange these corners. Sad but true.

As the ones above I can only point out that this is an essential feature for a product like Fences ...

... will return from time to time to check progress.

Cheers

Just want to add my frustration on this topic. Needs to be implemented.

Many folders all with the wrong view.

I know you have registry keys for this, add the option, update the keys, set the default for the next new keys generated.

Please.

Implementing this feature doesn't bring in revenue.  It'd be a great feature for existing users who know/understand what portals are, but it's not something really marketable to new users.

Frustrating the existing user base has two potential outcomes:

  1. Upgrades are purchased with the hope that this fix is finally in place (nope, been caught twice!)
  2. Squeaky wheels are just that - they can be ignored for as long as you have noise cancelling headphones on

Prove me wrong.  And the reason I ask you to prove it is because it's been long overdue on this "roadmap" that it should either been fixed by now or that the decision is to "never" implement it.  Keeping people in limbo for this long is just unprofessional.

I have been using Fences for at least ten years.  IT has approved the install to 4 different work computers, and they never let us install anything extra.  The Help Desk people at my company recognize the software and give it that knowing approval nod.

So if this is such a great product (which it almost is), why has this particular thread taken so long to garner a response, and a weak one at that?  In 6 days, it will be the SEVEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY of this relatively-important post.

Seven, Sean-with-Stardock-Support.  C'mon.  Stop being corporately-quiet and let us know you people are actually going to cater to this easy update.

Also, I have multiple monitors and can't get my (non-detailed-view) folder portals to stay on a non-primary screen.  Every reboot, and they are right back on the primary screen.  I've tried locking Fences, screenshotting, checking the different screen saving checkboxes.  Nothing.

Please get better.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you try Fences 6? I believe it come with more option on portal view setting.
