hangs frequently for several seconds under Windows 10 64 bit

Version 2.20.0.862

Dear Stardock team,

I don't know if this is a well-known issue but this is the ONLY issue I have so far with ObjectDock:

- the whole product freezes from time to time under Windows 10 (64-bit). It is really independent of the version of Windows 10. The effect is that it does not react on mouse clicks - I cannot open an app, switch from one folder to another or drag the whole windows around. At this time no other app anywhere on the desktop is affected with a similiar behavior. Also the start menu works. The freezing is typically after I just opened an app from ObjectDock.

Here is the style how I use ObjectDock:

Any idea what this is? Should I switch to Fences? I saw that ObjectDock was not updated since 2014. Is Fences the more modern product?

Thanks for any help

Hello,

Yes, Fences, a newer product compare to ObjectDock. And as a reminder ObjectDock is not supported on Windows 10.

OK, I'm in the status of try-out Fences. I agree that they have a lot of additional features and the software does not hang so far. Great!

Now I miss my usual "look&Feel" from Stardock (see my graphic above):

- application icons without names

- icons tight together so the fence does not need much space on the desktop

I could not find any option for this? Is this possible (or planned in future verison of fences)?

Thanks for any help. I really like your software (uses StartMenu since years - since that I like Windows 8/10 again).

I understand, I still do use ObjectDock on my Windows 7 system. And miss it when I am on my Windows 10. But I get used to it.

As for Fences future. I am not sure. But I have forwarded your report/request to the Stardock support team for their review and recommendations. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm a software designer, having my own company selling products as well. I do not the product manager of Stardock Software :-) but I would go into one of the following directions:

(1) provide an update of ObjectDock for Windows 10. It is a great product with a lot of features which have different purposes of Fences. For my understanding Fences is more about files and documents (dynamic) while ObjectDock is more about applications and icons (static).

(2) merge ObjectDock into Fences, so latter product has all features of ObjectDock and discontinue ObjectDock.

I really like ObjectDock, but I will look now for alternatives on the market. I keep you updated with my experiences

Best Wishes

Marcellus

Posting links to competitor software in the Stardock forums isn't something we encourage,

Don't worry - no links to competitor products because they unfortunately do not exist directly. There are some nice "MacOS"-style start bars, but - in contrast to ObjectDock - no other product I'm aware of supports many icons on multi-pages on smallest room like I used it (see picture at my initial post on this website). I bought Fences as well - I use it for organizing frequently-used document-shortcut icons and I like it for this - but again there is not support for several stacked pages with icons inside.

Should I ever retire I probably will start an own product with similar behavior like ObjectDock and merged with MacOS-style start bar. Before that I hope that ObjectDock finally gets updated to Windows 10.

I tried Fences and it's missing a lot of functionality ObjectDock has, plus it messes with your whole desktop, you have to resize your desktop icons to get them to change size in Fences, it pushes your desktop icons down when you have a Fence on the top, icons on Fences still have the shortcut icon in the bottom left, Fences can't reserve screen space and pop up on top of other windows like you can when rolling up / autohiding ObjectDock, you can't drag and drop to rearrange icons in fences (it sorts alphabetically), etc. There's a lot of reasons it's not a viable ObjectDock replacement.

ObjectDock has better functionality than Fences, but it does have a number of bugs on Windows 10. I'm not sure why the StarDock developers don't fix it to work with Microsoft's current operating system (and the only one supported in 2020). They're still making money on it, and people want to use it on their current computers.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

You can remove them...

ObjectDock has better functionality than Fences,

Fences is not really a relatable app to ObjectDock - they are completely different apps that solve totally independent problems.

They just censored my link to alternative software that works with windows 10, so I won't post the link again, but you can try removing all docklets (they may be causing the hangs. i disabled all advanced functionality in the settings as well and seem to be hanging less so far), but if you're still having issues, you can checkout winstep nexus until stardock decides it's worth it to support windows 10. I personally like the look and feel of objectdock better, so I'd rather have the bugs fixed than have to switch products.

You know, I don't know what he linked to, but what would be wrong with linking to Nexus? We do have a Winstep/Nexus gallery here at WC, so I see no issue promoting the app that uses those skins.  Just my opinion.....

Sean can you tell me why Object Dock is no longer supported? That hasn't been explained or I didn't get that message.

I tried an early version of Fences and it's not for me. This is when Fences first came out.

Tabbed Docks are really great. They take up less space on the desktop and you can fit a lot of useful shortcuts into them. Depending on the number of tabs.

I don't use any docklets. Maybe that's why I have zero trouble with the Tabbed Docks I use. There's no lag whatsoever. Mouse over, the tab comes down, click on the shortcut and Bang! In fact I'm using OD 1.90 Plus which is the older version. My OS is Win 10 and no problems with the docks.

I don't think I'll ever use Fences.

Chas from what I read the creator of OD no longer works with StarDock any more. What that means I don't know. Stardock should have full rights to the coding. The only thing I can think of is no one knows how to code it for 10.

I agree with RND' since OD doesn't work with 10 why not give a link to alternative app. Winstep skins are on this site and JC comes on here and reports an update to the app. You have Rainmeter skins on here, if someone asks what they are can't you put a link to that app?

My opinion (which isn't worth very much) is that Winstep and StarDock should do a deal together to sell Winstep on StarDock's website. 2cents

I've been using ObjectDock with Windows 10 without problems until recently. It started hanging when opening or closing programs even if they weren't started through ObjectDock. The hang times were between 15 and 30 seconds.

This morning I found that I can eliminate all hang problems by deactivating taskbar support. Everything else works fluidly.

Open settings - settings - troubleshooting and activate Temporarily disable ObjectDocks Taskbar ability. Restart the computer.

I still see the system tray items and now my animations, labels, work just fine again. I use the clock app as reference and it runs smoothly, the second hand never stops. Before it would visibly hang for up to 30 seconds.

wbszx, Thanks. It works. Forbidden to start the process dock64.exe in the program "Process Lasso". I didn't delete dock64.exe. Now the ObjectDock has stopped freezing when closing application windows. Work perfect for me.
