Forum update: November 2017

I have requested the new changes you now see on the site that make the forums cleaner visually.

The next step is to have a lot more data presented when you mouse over an item.

I know some people won't like the changes, but as someone who lives on these forums, I really need the site to be cleaner and quicker to navigate through.

The recent posts section looks great,  less clutter and it appears to load faster., imo. I may be one of the minority but I may like the changes. Carry on.

I like it, but I'm going to miss the Last Poster name (re: spam).

Seems fine to me, but as DaveRI said the Last Poster name would be nice to leave on. It would also be really nice if you could add the ability to drag and drop image uploads in the forums too Brad. :)

" be really nice if you could add the ability to drag and drop image uploads in the forums too Brad"

            I'll second that!

I'll third that, pictures make it easier to show what the problem or solution is.

3 or 4 times in the past 2 years you have made a topic. Asking us members what we would like to see changed or added. There have been several suggestions but I can't remember any that said to remove the last posters name for a time or date on the "Recent Forum Posts" But as you stated you wanted this so here it is and that is fine.

The biggest thing always listed is the ability to to upload images here on WC.

My believed is when a thread is made asking for what the members would like to see or added it be addressed. It wouldn't take long for example to say. " We have no intentions on providing a method to upload images through Wincustomize. We either like it or don't but at least have an answer. If we had the ability to upload images I truly believe this place would be better. Screen-shot threads would be jumping. People that have questions which many have. A quick screen-shot from someone that has the answer could actually show the person how or location.

Maybe the cost to do this would be much to high. I think people would understand. But a reply would be nice. Or just no more threads asking what we would like to see added or changed.

I'm another one who has wanted images in the posts as opposed to links, especially now that Photobucket, as an example, has removed all links unless you pay them $99 a year (I believe it is).

Looks like the thing that auto subscribed you to a thread has been fixed. Thank you!!

Hmmm, not fixed here Jim, the "Subscribe to this post" and "Email me when someone replies " boxes are both checked now, you have to un-check both before clicking Post Reply.

Hmmm, wasn't there earlier, I swear!

It is frogboy's forum and I never complain.

Here is some data.

One laptop I use is running windows 8.

I haven't let it update in over a year and a half.

It is running no security software what so ever.

I update the browsers and run no add-ons or extensions.

The laptop uses low resources that I monitor all the time.

It is super fast never hangs and works perfect.

I enjoyed skinning, I don't skin anymore, I like stopping by the forums.

I like the web sites when they are functioning.

Well, I hope Brad is pleased with the changes.  But the significant decrease in useful information available at a glance is a little disappointing.  There may also be at least one bug - posts with new replies since my last login no longer appear in boldface.  FTR, I only visit JU.

RE: The Subscribe/Email checkboxes - Subscribe is now unchecked here*, but Email remains checked.  IIRC, the behavior you designate in your profile overrides those per-post options, anyway.

YMMV

*EDIT: sometimes

Yes.  I insisted on that change so that it works like every other forum out there.

Instead of bolding the font we put an icon on the left and we eliminated the display of an icon if it's simply a post you've never participated in before to clean that up.

The two areas we are looking into:

1. Showing the avatar of the person who posted the post

2. Showng the avatar of the last response

Plus, tooltips.

Though, most spam posters don't have any avatar. :(

Thanks for the explanation.  I get the code now.

Here is the name you requested Jafo.

It is not the only one.

I found it on a news site.

Bring back bolding of unread posts - much simpler to determine what you have or have not seen as yet. Had the same change happen at another site and the condemnation of that change was deafening.

To tell you the truth when I saw the 'new' forum I didn't think it looked 'cleaner', I thought it was broken - had to refresh the page twice convinced it had not finished loading or something. Then I noticed this thread.

Yes, sometimes less is more, but I don't think this is one of those cases. Did anyone ever complain that the forums looked cluttered?

EDIT: Well, looking at it again, I guess people eventually get used to (almost) everything. :)

We are going to add the article post and last responder info back but in a way that that allows it to be a single row.
