Will there be melee like in Star Control Classic?

Okay...  I originally played this game on Sega CD system.... (Yes, I'm ancient and that's no reason to hate. :D) 

The thing I liked best was the 2 player melee. Getting into altered states and playing melee with a friend in a similar condition was WAY too much fun. Knocking out a Chengesu (sp.?) with a Syrene (aka, Space Strippers) was just a super giggle. Don't get me started with the "use all earthling ships to take out the bad guys" trick. They were SO cheap and using a gravity slingshot off the planet to go SUPER fast was great. (Just pray you can get to the planet in time.)

Frankly, I hated SC2..... Horrible wretched thing. I have yet to get that thing to work satisfactorily on any computer I've ever owned. I always gave up after I learned that there was no good support for a controller. And, I have little to no hope that even if I used my PSP PC controller that I'd have any luck with that either.

So, I know I'm probably in the "giggle/smirk/guffaw" category about things I'd like to see in this latest iteration. But, those 1 on 1 battles were great "time suckers" in dim recesses of my memory and frankly, uber addictive. Add some online play to that and we don't even have to leave the house to do it.... 

So, I've said my piece of peace about this subject. I'm writing out of frustration that the evil dosbox stymied again and I just didn't want to relearn something that I will NEVER need for anything else in my life other than the old Star Control. I know I'm just a great big sticky wad of nostalgia over this.  But I MISS IT SO BAD!!!!!

 

P.S. If you actually made it to the end of this post, I salute your patience and forbearance. Thanx for taking time to listen to me blubbering about a time in my life that I'm nearly certain I will ever have again. However, now that I'm in my 50's, I guess it's time for me to learn how to eulogies. I'm gonna need those skills in 20 years or so....

Uh... why are you using DOSBOX? http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php - you're welcome.

I did want to come on here to help you out with that easy, free version of Star Control 2, so you can melee your heart out like the good ole days.

But, if you call Star Control II a "horrible, wretched thing" ever again, I AM gonna have to pound on you, just a little bit.

WHAT?!?!? Star Control II is the best EVER!

Though I can understand if you are looking to play melee with a controller. But I second cuorebrave's advice, get the Ur-quan Masters! It's really good, and you can even download full voice, if you want.

But, Origins won't be Star Control if there isn't kick-ass melee! At minimum, I would expect local melee, as well as, hopefully online ranked play!

yesterday, frogboy showed off a little bit of Star Control: Origins on the stream on Steam.  What did he show?  SUPER MELEE.  It was a short display (maybe 5 minutes) but he showed the game off on a live stream.
