"Cannot Invade. No Genocide Ships" ??????

So my game auto-patched on Steam, loaded up and found my ongoing save no longer worked. Oops. So I started a new one.

My neighbor declares war, I fight him off, build a couple troop transports and fly off to take his nearby capital planet. Only it won't let me invade.

I try to move my transport to the planet and invade it, same as I have done countless other times in previous games, only I get a bizarre error message.

"CANNOT INVADE. No Genocide Ships"

Huh???? What on Earth does that mean? I have never seen this before, nor can I find any reference to this anywhere on the internet or in this forum. I thought the invasion mechanics were left unchanged, or am I missing something?

I should add I am playing base game with no mods, though with some custom races.

pshaw has said that Stardock is looking into this.  No word yet.

Not having enough genocide always puts a damper on the spirit of things...

We patched a fix for this yesterday.  Can you make sure that you are not on the opt-in branch and verify your steam files?

I don't know what "op-in branch" means, but I did verify the integrity of my game files through Steam. I had to run it 4 times, actually, before it said I was 100%. The first time it said 4 files were incorrect, then 3, before it said they were all good.

I reloaded my save game and it still gives me this error message every time I try to invade a planet. I started a new game just so I could try invading a planet and it worked, no problem. But reloaded my previous save and it still gives me the error. Is that save game just hosed then?

(Though in this rapid play through I did encounter a different bug where I never received ANY of the free ships I was supposed to get through Ideology points. I chose both the free frigate through malevolent and free construction ships through pragmatic. Never got any of them. Also had survey ships go into anomalies and had a blank window pop up, but with no text and no reward. I also had a random enemy planet deep in his own territory somehow flip culturally to my empire. I then traded it to someone else for tech, then two turns later it culture flipped to me a second time. So in other words, a very bizarre spectrum of bugs I am suddenly experiencing since the 2.5 patch. It makes me not want to play anymore because I don't trust it won't give me some game breaking error right now)

I'm having the same problem. I found out I was fortunate enough to share a border with the Krynn. In anticipation, I started to build my military along their border. That upset them so they attacked. They took some of my outer worlds so I attacked their core systems in retaliation. And I got this error...

They have no problem taking my planets, but I can't conquer theirs.

I am no in the beta, verifying the game cache did nothing, and reloading/restarting did nothing.

I was NOT trying to take their home world or their last world and I had just researched biological warfare (I have never used bio before and never seen this error before so I don't know if it is more than coincidental correlation).

I play pretty epic games so just starting over is not an option for me since I was about 6 hours into this game before the error popped up and I'm not spending 6 hours to run into another game-ending bug.

Unfortunately, a lot of bugfixes do require starting a new game to take effect. I'm not sure if this is one of them, but I would assume it is.

I personally recommend never ever starting a real game until at least 3 days after a major patch comes out, and ideally more like 2 weeks, since they always rush this stuff out the door as fast as humanly possible. Most major patches since this game first released, including the launch itself, have had at least a few serious bugs, and most have been FLOODED with bugs. Yes they do get them fixed pretty quickly afterward (though the minor XML issues seem to drag on forever), but that's just how they operate. I dislike it in the strongest possible terms personally, but I've made that clear enough before in other posts so I'm not going to rant here. Just please be aware what to expect with brand-new GC3 patches, ESPECIALLY the big ones. ;)

If I understand correctly, there's no way around this.  Each game sucks up it's "starting context" into the save file and thereafter pays no attention to other files.

That is mostly correct, as it "sucks up" - nice term ;) - the XML, which is where all the game data is, into the save files.

The one exception is bugfixes in the main game .exe itself, which is where most or all of the compiled programming code is. When they fix a bug that is completely contained there, the fix will apply to existing save games. But most bugs are either entirely in the XML, or in the .exe but with their fixes also requiring XML tweaks (or vice versa).

Unfortunately, this is the problem you will run into when you don't wait a little first after new versions are posted. It does appear from the forum here that, as of the Friday morning silent update, there are now no remaining critical bugs in 2.5.

I've started new games and each one replicates the error no matter what tech choices I make or starting conditions I select.

Guess I'll go play Master of Orion for a bit, then.

Ugh, sounds like it's still broken then. Unless you're still in the "2.5 Opt-In" Beta option instead of the main release version.

It's still happening to me. After your response I did the "verify integrity" thing, and started a new game to test out invasions. The previous save still exhibited the problem, but in the new game I was able to invade. But I wasn't playing it seriously, and just wanted to test out invasions. So after I saw it worked I started a brand new game. Many hours into this game I invaded a planet just to have the same friggin genocide ship error pop up again.

This is beyond frustrating. I am uninstalling this game. I'm going to wait a few weeks for you to get your game in order, then I'm going to try one more time installing it fresh. If I hit that error again I will be uninstalling the game for good.

(again for the record, base game only, no mods, customized race, opted OUT of all beta programs)

Did you happen to receive transports through unlocking an ideology trait?  If so, we have a fix coming for that soon.

Yea, I'm just not getting this issue.

I'm encountering this on the campaign in the first Drath mission.

Exitted, re-verified game files in Steam, still got it.  Not opted into beta patches.

There are two threads on this, the other one is in the support forum.  I'll repost my reply I made there here, it has a link to my campaign savefile where I encountered this bug:

Here's a link to my savegame with this bug in, I think its the prequel 3rd mission, the first one with the Drath:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByxJB3KvvsoJVU1xak9CWTNmamM

The "Cannot Invade. No Genocide Ships." error generates when attempting to invade Dratha (in the northeast part of the map) with my transport a little to the east of Dratha.

This is Crusade, 2.5 (no beta opt-in).

Which Ideology are they?

I've never gotten this error and I started a new game right as the beta came out as a founder...    I almost always play Bene so I never ever have Genocide ships

Actually no. Any ideology trait that gives ships never actually gave me any. I uninstalled the other day and was going to reinstall it in a week or two once things shook out a little more. I also just bought Crusade so from now on any games I play will probably be using that.

I haven't had any problems with ships spawning.  Can you be more specific on which ideology trait you unlocked?

I got none of the freighters I was supposed to get from choosing the Pragmatic ideology (I forget the specific name, but the one with 5 free Construction ships).

I also never got the free frigate from the Malevolent ideology that is supposed to give you one.

Tried these in multiple games, and even ones that didn't give me the "Genocide Ships" error would never give me the free ships.
