Origins vs. Eternal & Infinite

Origins vs. Eternal & Infinite

So as some of you may recall, Star Control 1 was actually a bit of a strategy game while Star Control 2 was the action adventure game.

We had played around with the idea of merging both concepts into the initial release of Star Control: Origins but decided it would be too messy to try to explain what Star Control was in one fell swoop.

So instead, Eternal & Infinite will be released as a future expansion.

In EnI you get a sector (100 light years by 100 light years).  There's typically around 500 stars in a sector (really!).

Anyway, rather than controlling one ship, you run Star Control itself and explore, expand, fight wars, negotiate treaties, improve your tech, etc.

The current plan is that Eternal & Infinite will be released approximately a year after the release of Origins.

As a true SC1/SC2 fan, I want E&I to succeed. But it need to be done after making SC:O successful. Not in parallel. No resources devoted to it, until SC:O is made good.

Also, E&I would make or break, based on how good is SM combat.

I'm with Bleybourne here. Although i'm not the one to trust community content that much, still SC:O adventure game will be the first major release so i'm not sure what the complaints are about. E&I is happening AFTER SC:O is released. So y'all should relax first... lol

Besides, I'm happy for an SC strategy game, and that also might push me to drop $65 for the life time founder to get the expansion. And it seems most comments here are positive about it. Not much of a community research but also making louder and longer rants doesn't make you more right either.

Out of curiosity will E&I be turn-based, real time or real time with pause?

Basically, this is a deviation from what the majority of SC fans like about SC, myself included. This is not about being given "new cool stuff", it's about receiving entirely different stuff.

I'll just mention that if I wanted to play SC2 4x, I'd buy GalCiv3 and install this mod:

You guys DO understand that Star Control was a strategy game before it was an adventure game, right? You keep going on about how this is some new thing that Stardock are doing and you don't understand why they're not sticking to "an adventure game like star con". But Star Control was a strategy game. They're just fulfilling their originally stated plan to bring back Star Control and it's game modes. SC1 was a strategy game, SC2 was an adventure game. You're getting both. If they weren't doing E&I then they wouldn't actually be "doing Star Control".

Anyway, rant over. I still don't get why you're salty about getting more stuff rather than less, but I'm bored of discussing it now :-)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

SC1 was never that game. It was SC2. Nobody here signed up for SC1. There's about 10 founders who played SC1 and 5 of them don't even remember what it's about. You're not getting a free game mode. You're getting 4x mode in lieu of another adventure expansion/main title improvement. It's like getting a 4x mode in Fallout 4 instead of World of Nuka-Cola XPN. Like basebuilding in NMS instead of MP.

We the other majority are fine with the concept.

Speak for yourselves, don't just assume that you are the majority because your side is the loudest.  I find the idea interesting.  Currently I'm more concerned with SCO turning out well and will judge E&I when it's a relevant conversation to have.

Now you're just pulling complete nonsense out of your ass. How about you just stop?

I'm kind of surprised this has created such a heated response. Eternal & Infinite was highlighted earlier on, though maybe not so explicitly. Brad has also talked about strategic and simulation elements being a long term goal in the two voice chat Q&A sessions we have had on Discord.

Whether you are optimistic, pessimistic or neutral about the idea it is not something we are going to see for something like two years or more. Brad has made it quite clear that the focus is on super melee, adventure and the modding tools for the initial release and that he wants to get it refined to a "1.5" or "2.0" kind of state before it even goes public.

So instead, Eternal & Infinite will be released as a future expansion.

The current plan is that Eternal & Infinite will be released approximately a year after the release of Origins.

Having a big fight over this right now is just a little premature.

I don't remember when I saw GalCiv3 founder badge last time here on SCO forum either.

Do GC3 founder badges even show up here?

Edit: No, they don't, or else I'd have one.

There seems to be some kind of hidden separation. I don't see Star Control threads whilst browsing the general Stardock forums or Ashes of the Singularity forums. Not sure what is up with that.

You'd think it would show up in the forum posts themselves.

It'd be nice if it did. Some of us complained about forums being outdated. Nothing came of it.

Forum badges have priority based on what forum you are browsing. If you are on GC3 forums the GC3 badge will appear, on SCO forums the SCO badge will instead etc.

You might not care about any of this "new cool stuff" and be disappointed that E&I isn't about expanding the core gameplay of SC:O - which is meant to expand on the gameplay of SC2 itself.

So this is why some of us are disappointed - we don't necessarily care for the rest of Stardock's arsenal (I personally haven't played any of their games, although I'm sure some of them are great), and we are uncomfortable with the "appropriation" that's being done here to Star Control.

Hi there.  I've been playing Star Control since before I was a teen, having picked it up in...  91 and then again in 92.  I grew up on both Star Control and Star Control 2.  Don't get me wrong, I did prefer SC2.  The story was fun.  However, the original SC was great as well.

You're laying this on Stardock, but they're making Origins as a nod to both SC2 and its predecessor alike.   I -love- that they're giving us the ability to play both modes.

The understanding is that it will be realtime and play very similarly to SC:O, just with the ability to command an entire faction in addition to SC:O shenanigans.

thank god its real time, i dont like turn base "-/

I'm not sure how realtime would fit.

If general idea is to have strategy layer and SM for battle resolution (which is the core of SC1 strategy mode), I cant see anything else then turn based that could fit.

If the time scale is slow enough, you don't need turns. Paradox does this very well.

wow people are really harsh here.

I was a big SC1 fan before SC2 came out. It's the reason I played SC2. I've played almost every 4x space game trying to reclaim some of that magic. I agree that there are many options for that already, but I'd happily take a 4x game in the starcon universe a year after a great adventure game in the starcon universe. and I'd rather have it as expansion content (and a whole new game mode is some great DLC!) than having to buy a completely separate game.

Just mentioning that I like this idea. Because some people on this forum seem to be speaking for themselves as if they are an authority on all of us.
