2.4 Vulkan performance downgrade on high end PC

I just ran a benchmark for Vulkan after I changed it in settings.  First this is my PC:

Windows 10 Pro

Intel i7-7700k @4.5 with turbo enabled (no overclock)

16gb PC3200 DDR4 Ram

Geforce 1070 8gb

Asus Strix Soar Sound Card

750 watt EVGA PSU

Latest Nvidia drivers

I play Fullscreen 1440p with a Gsync Monitor

Benchmark Settings:

1440p, Fullscreen, DX12, No Vsync, No multiple GPU and No 3rd Party Overlay checked

MSAA:  2X, PLQ: High, Glare:  Mid, TerrainOQ: Ultra, Shading: High, TerrainShading: High, Shadow: Low, Texture: High, Environmental fx and clouds: Enabled

With those settings I get an avg overall framerate of 82 - CPU is 103

When I enabled Vulkan (which was the only thing I changed) my FPS avg dropped to 42 and CPU was still 102.

Really strange dip for my system with Vulkan.  I know with Doom and Vulkan my avg FPS on ultra quality is over 100... granted I understand two completely different games.  Just an example.

For now I am going to just use DX12.

Thanks and hope this helps!

I get a similar drop on my 970. It really doesn't like Nvidia cards at the moment. For AMD cards Vulkan seems to be better than dx11 but not yet as good as DX12. First steps though so hopefully it will mature over the next patch or two.

Make sure you have the absolute latest drivers.

Nvidia:

Version: 385.28 - WHQL

Release: August 14th 2017

Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

AMD:

Version: Crimson ReLive Edition 17.7.2

Release: July 27th 2017

Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

My own test was done with the latest drivers - wouldn't run otherwise. If I remember correctly on the Extreme preset 1920x1200 (GTX 970) the Vulkan's average fps was 27 while dx11 was 52 with dx12 a few fps behind that. So far all the Nvidia results I've seen show a similar drop off for Vulkan. AMD seem to be doing much better.

Yes as I posted in my OP, I have latest drivers installed.  Interesting that it seems to be related to Nvidia drivers.  I suppose as long as the game still works well on DX12 like it does I will be fine.  Hopefully further optimizations will help with Vulkan.

Vulkan will generally be a downgrade in performance compared to DX12. However, it will often be an upgrade for DX11 users on Windows 7 and 8. DX12 is only available for Windows 10. But as we said in the release, it is still early days for Vulkan support and will continue to be improved and optimized.

I have to say, I can't even see what difference gets made - the game instantly crashes, and the PC ends up going to the Blue Screen of Death if I try to run it in Vulkan.

Not sure if I've done something wrong.
